Purple in Plants
What are the pigments?
What makes Plants purple? Plants that grow at high altitudes in alpine habitats are more likely to be blue or purple flowers because the pigments that cause these colors also screen out Ultra Violet Radiation.
The pigments Pelargonidin and Delpinidin that cause purple blue and red flowers and also fruits like blueberries are called ANTHOCYANINS which along with Anthoxanthins ( cream and yellow) are FLAVONOIDS based on the FLAVONE Molecule.
Blue or purple mutations in species are a proof of evolution since they are caused by mutations. Hence the scarity of blue and purple roses in comparision to the more white and red.
