Puppy in a Pen
December 25th 2011 19:06
Puppy Linux is one of the smallest distributions of open-source Linux out there, and I have found that I really like using Lucid Puppy to do my website work. NOW, currently I will not carry a laptop around Galveston Island, where I live, as with the economy in the dump doing so would invite getting robbed. But, they use windows at my job at Behrens Southern Comfort Medical Suppliy, and my particular box is old and slow. For a Drupal CMS Specialist managing large ecommerce webs this just will not do! So I use Puppy linux on the same computer, which has all the tools on it I need, including a Lampp web server for doing major changes on one of the sites without doing so on the live web.
That box screams like and atacking eagle when it comes to speed. I pay absolutely nothing for the tools I use, meaning applications needed for everything including advanced graphics work.
How?
You can install many flavours of open source 'live' Linux on a cd, dvd or pen drive' and boot up on most computers into those installs without touching the native installed OS. Of course the applications are free as thay are not......proprietary......
I do my work at the medical products supplier, and then when I get home I can boot up my desktop using the SAME Puppy install I use at work! All the applications, settings and work done that day are there as if magically only my settings have transformed. It works so well I may never carry a laptop again. All I need today is a box or laptop that can boot from a pen drive and again only the location has changed.
Next blog I will let you in on how you can do this. It can be done from a Windows computer with access to the internet, or Linux or Mac. If you opt to use a pen drive instead of a cd/dvd with pen for storage, you can do this without having to burn the cd first. Your Linux distro of choice can probably be installed directly from the Internet to the pen drive. After that you just reboot the computer into your Linux, and viola!
I will close today stating that I predict here a new trend in mobile computing is coming soon, where you will walk up to a terminal at malls and coffee shops, plug in your pen or other kind of card provided most likely by your carrier or the company providing the public terminals, and work on a full-blown environment just as if you are carrying a lappy or are at home or work - and it is the same working envorinment anywhere! You may think mobile devices may change this idea, and for a large part they will, but many will also want the large screen, full OS and all their personal stuff any and everywhere.
If you are an Internet or mobile communications company employee, and read this, I will FREELY let you in on the architecture needed to pull this off! Why? My goal is the good of the many, not just me, myself and I. I want to see this vision happen.
And for now I carry no laptop, yet in my pocket have as powerful an operating system with me ready to boot up into most modern computers anywhere I have access to one. I have a Puppy in my Pocket!
Over the next few blogs I think to cover some different Linux distributions. But first I will let you in on how you can adopt your own puppy to accompany you everywhere you go, not even noticeable until you want to play with your favorite pet. Someday those envisioned public terminals will exist along with coin drops and card sliders, provider accounts, etc.
First things first. Come on back in a day or so and let's give some cute little puppies new homes!
Orble Rocks!
"with open-source you are limited only by that which you do not know.
