Thanks to Carrie for emailing me this - love ya!

Australian map of Australia
Australian map of Australia

Being Australian is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for A Belgian beer, then on the way home, grabbing an Indian curry or A Turkish kebab, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV.

Oh and..... Only in Australia ... can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.

Only in Australia ... do supermarkets make sick people walk all the way to the back of the shop to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front.

Only in Australia ... do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries and a DIET coke.
Only in Australia ... do banks leave both doors open and chain the pens to the counters.
Only in Australia ... do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and lock our junk and cheap lawn mower in the garage.

NOT TO MENTION....

3 Aussies die each year testing if a 9v battery works on their tongue..

58 Aussies are injured each year by using sharp knives instead of screwdrivers.

31 Aussies have died since 1996 by watering their Christmas tree while the fairy lights were plugged in.

8 Aussies had serious burns in 2000 trying on a new jumper with a lit cigarette in their mouth.

A massive 543 Aussies were admitted to Emergency in the last two years after opening bottles of beer with their teeth.

and finally..........

In 2000 eight Aussies cracked their skull whilst throwing up into the toilet.

Ya know what Jason, this is like a challenge that I might have to accept; only from an Alaskan perspective. Great stuff.

Australians sound very much like Canadians!

Interesting map of Australia too. Looks like if the sharks, crocs, rays or giant spiders don't get you... cyclones or Danni Minogue just might!

Now I'm wondering if the line " Maybe the dingo ate your baby" originated in Australia?

Nevar - bring it on - I would love to read an Alaskan version. I would also very much like to visit Alaska one day.

TWPY - Oi Oi Oi

Deanna - Haha yes Danni Minogue is scary
The line "A Dingo Ate My Baby" is very famous and is definately an Australian story. See below for how it all came about.

Azaria Chantel Loren Chamberlain (born 11 June 1980 in Mount Isa, Queensland) was a nine-week-old Australian baby who disappeared on the night of 17 August 1980 on a camping trip to Ayers Rock (Uluru) with her family.

Her parents, Lindy and Michael Chamberlain, reported that she had been taken from their tent by a dingo. An initial inquest, highly critical of the police investigation, supported this assertion. The findings of the inquest were broadcast live on television - a first in Australia. Subsequently, after a further investigation and second inquest, Azaria's mother, Lindy Chamberlain, was tried and convicted of her murder, on 29 October 1982 and sentenced to life imprisonment. Azaria's father, Michael Chamberlain, was convicted as an accessory after the fact and given a suspended sentence.

The media focus for the trial was extraordinarily intense and sensational. The Chamberlains made several unsuccessful appeals, including the final High Court appeal. After all legal options had been exhausted, the chance discovery of a piece of Azaria's clothing in an area full of dingo lairs led to Lindy Chamberlain's release from prison, on "compassionate grounds." She was later exonerated of all charges. While the case is officially unsolved, the report of a dingo attack is generally accepted. Recent deadly dingo attacks in other areas of Australia have strengthened the case for the dingo theory.

The line "A Dingo Took (Ate) My Baby" was actually made world famous thanks to Meryl Streep who played Lindy Chamberlain in the movie of the entire case. The movie was called Evil Angels in Australia and "A Cry in the Dark" for the rest of the world.

I just have to point out here that the accent Meryl Streep was using in that movie was certainly NOT an Australian accent. I think she should have listened to more Australians speak before she did the film.

Jason, I didn't get it. Why do people use their teeth to open bottled beers, instead of using the stuff called, "Bottle opener"? Maybe, they just want to show off or...?

Aussie blokes also like to open their beer with their belly button. Well they used to anyway - I don't hang out with those sorts of blokes any more, so I don't know if they still do it.
