Proof of bad management

Tebowing
Denver seeks divine intervention...

OK, I've been pretty rough on Tim Tebow. It's not (entirely) his fault. Well, let me rephrase: his lack of QB ability is entirely his fault, but the position he's been forced into, and the false expectations created because of it, are completely not his fault. He is the poster boy and lightning rod all at the same time for everything wrong with Denver. The trouble is...Tebow is about the least of their concerns!

In the NFL, a bad first round pick can set a team back by years. Look at Oakland and JaMarcus Russell. They wasted a first overall on a bum who was more convinced of his ability than he was willing to work on it. As a result, Oakland continued to stumble until the 2011 draft where they seemed to pull it all together. But a poor management situation can doom a team to a decade of futility. To wit: Detroit was "Matt Millen'd" into submission and an 0-16 season. Next up on the altar of sheer stupidity and football negligence: Denver.

Pat Bowlen has always been rather highly considered among NFL owners. So how the hell did it come to this?

Denver had several years at the tail end of the Shanahan era where they started out doing well but crashed at season's end. Shanny always blamed the defense, yet never bothered to draft intelligently. Since Shanny (who's ego is about as big as an NFL coach's can get) was also the GM, he managed to draft himself into that position of weakness. Let's face it, Shanny's last drafts were average at best and poor at worst. But then in a decision smacking of epic failure, the Denver brain trust got some thirty-something kid who had deluded himself into thinking that he was the next Bill Belichick. McDaniels drafts were even worse than Shanahan's, including the complete Tebow debacle. Denver is now paying for about 10 years of below average football front office work. They're in a tight crunch now because of the complete bungling of McDaniels.

It will take the Broncos at least five years of above average drafts before they have a team capable of competing at a high level. Five years. As a Denver fan, I'd be puking reading this right now knowing that I have to watch a crappy home team for five years while they rebuild. All because management butchered decisions. You want a poster child for front office mismanagement? Tim Tebow in the first round.

God help the Broncos. Maybe Tebow can legitimately help with that.
