Mumbai recently hosted the UN MDG Summit 2008. Around 300 international delegates were a part of this.
It was hosted at the Jaihind College in South Mumbai. All the participants were divided into 8 groups and each group was assigned one of the 8 MDG's. These 8 MDG's had been fixed by the world leaders in 2000. They wanted to quantify the amount of social outreach being done and thus these 8 goals were set to be achieved by 2015.
Now that we are at the mid-point of the 15 years this summit was to evaluate how much had been done and what more can be done in order to achieve the targets.
The delegates got together and made proposals for achieving their MDG and also made a documentary! These documentaries are to be shown at UN head quarters.
I was a delegate at this Summit. You can read my personal views on my other blog...

Mumbai is one of the only places in India that we get Victoria's, this what we call horse buggies.
Many of them are really decorated and lighted. It is real good to sit in one. Especially we get them near the sea side so we can just travel along the sea, in the night. Can be very romantic!
These buggies are found near Gateway of India and Nariman Point. Lot of bargaining can be done with the driver .
Often these horses are not treated properly, sometimes they have swollen legs. I used to think that the drivers don't care about them but now I think that the drivers barely have any money so they can't really offer the horses much especially considering the poor health care facilities for animals in India.

For a newbie to Mumbai the geographics of the city takes some time. Mumbai is mainly sectioned as South Mumbai, Suburbs and New Mumbai.
New Mumbai is actually a different district. It has been developed in the last few years around Mumbai city. It is a pretty big area with a large population.
South Mumbai (where I live) is where Mumbai began. It is a posh area and somewhat dull, it doesn't have much in terms of night life, bars, discos etc compared to the suburbs. But it is a very pretty stretch with the classic Marine Drive Belt, The Gateway of India and other heritage buildings and landmarks.
The suburbs on the other hand are congested and polluted but they are a lot more happening. New company outlets usually find place here. In fact the Kentucky Fried Chicken has its first and only outlet at Bandra which is a suburb. I would place Bandra as the most happening place in Mumbai.
Maybe a post on Bandra later.
Now the suburbs are newly and haphazardly made around the south mumbai, there is no real city planning hence barely any green spaces. There are a few mangroves left for which many preservation efforts are underway. I dont know whether they can be saved cause it is hard to find caring for flamingos in the government bureaucracy.
Mudflats In A Mumbai Suburb
If you get a sense of chaos in my descriptions it is because well Mumbai is quite chaotic, living in South Mumbai I barely know some of the suburban areas.
Is this how it is in your city Sydney, Melbourne wherever??

Gaylord is a mid sized restaurant in Churchgate. It has a really good bakery, it is one of the first good bakeries available in Mumbai. Recently new places have started up close by but it still retains a charm.
They have a large variety of pastries, cakes, pies, mousse and other mouth watering stuff.
For those who don't want dessert they have puffs, mini pizzas, bread rolls and other dishes in veg and non veg both. [ Click here to read more ]

Today being a Sunday I went for a drive. My plan was to go out of Mumbai however we became late owing to my late night surfing and well we got out by 11.00 am. I found myself at Aksa Beach after some 2 hours of driving and it was a wonderful place!
Not crowded at all... it is a wild beach. By wild I mean the sea does not seem tame. (Well I don't know how you feel about the sea but I find it has a character, different at every beach. So this one seemed untame and wild. And maybe this 'feel' has something in it, cause quite a few deaths have happened here due to its unpredictable nature.)
What I guessed in my short time there was that the water probably comes in too quick during high tide, I was standing on the rocks (which are very interesting I must mention, they were all covered with these weird coral/shell type stuff. Which looked kinda gross but interested me) when the water started coming in and since I was really alert I just waded back quickly but one patch of my way was already water logged, so while frolicking in the water if I had failed to notice the rise in the levels it could be a bad scenario! So my sympathies with the people lost on this beach. [ Click here to read more ]

One of the landmarks of Mumbai is the Rajabai Tower. Shaped like the Big Ben of England, this tower stands gloriously from the campus of The University of Mumbai. It is named after the mother of the architect Rajabai.
Rajabai Tower and the Mumbai Stock Exchange behind it
I don't know what Big Ben exactly does but this tower chimes every hour. Though during the busy day these chimes are not really audible unless you are standing under it or lying on the lawns of Mumbai Univ. to hear them. But on a silent night these chimes permeate the air and many times while passing by I have heard these chimes from quite afar. There is a spiral staircase that goes to the top however it is pretty damaged now so people are not allowed on it. [ Click here to read more ]

This is a unique Indian dish... It probably originated from North India. More than food it is like a post-food ritual.
Supposedly it eases digestion but no one knows truly what it does. Just this that there are many many who really dig it!
