Prediction Posturing
March 17th 2008 23:27
It is time. Our beloved sport, footy, is set to begin another season. The papers have been emptying their sports sections of non-footy material and gearing us up for the new season. To sustain the drive toward a footy takeover during the past week the "experts" clamour to be heard over each other's din so they can tell You about the season to come. Colour liftouts with player lists, double page spreads of "expert" predictions and Top 50 player rankings for the season ahead, are all the norm at this time of year.
And as I see this jostling for position to win the footy media war I can't help but wonder is there anything of any substance amongst all the hoopla.
The excitement of the season ahead compels people to read these much-hyped predictions but when the end of the season comes who is really interested in seeing just how wrong each of the experts were.
Did anyone tip Geelong to win it all last year save the subjective non-experts, the fans who barrack for them?
Haven't St. Kilda and Fremantle been tipped to finish high/win the premiership for the last five years and dismally failed?
How on Earth can you rank the top 50 players for the season ahead without falling into self-promotional farce?
Will I ever see ladder predictions for the year ahead not based on how much media hype surrounds the team (Carlton)? Or that doesn't just perpetuate media-created myths (St. Kilda) about how good a team is?
I'll wait till the first bounce to make any predictions myself and do my best to avoid such grandiose prophecies.
