Powerful Practice Pointer - “How to Keep Good Associates – Part I”
March 8th 2010 20:05
A water-tight contract might physically keep an associate in your practice, but if they emotionally don’t want to be there, a contract can act as a liability. What most associates want from their employer has been well researched, and more money is not number 1. In fact, it came in at number 7. That’s not to say they wouldn’t take a rise or a cash gift, but that is often not the highest priority.
Most employees and associates would rather feel appreciated than have more money. Often, the primary way anyone wants to be appreciated is the same way that they give appreciation. If they give you a small gift, then a gift is probably what they would appreciate more than kind words of affirmation.
So how do we know how to appreciate an associate? In his book titled “The Five Love Languages”, Gary Chapman tells us there are 5 ways to show our love and appreciation
1. Words of affirmation
2. Quality of life
3. Receiving gifts
4. Acts of service
5. Physical touch
By understanding what members of your team need from their employer, you are sure to maintain a happy, productive and fulfilling group of associates and CAs.
Next week, we’ll look at two other needs that an employer can provide to maintain a good associate.
