Pompey History - A good place to start (LINK)

The history of Portsmouth Football Club is pretty long, as it is an old club. So I will just put in the major highs and lows of the club.
The club is situated in the south coast city of Portsmouth in the UK. It was established on the 5th April 1898 by a local brewery man John Brickwood. The clubs nickname is Pompey. Which is also the nickname of city.
Their first game in the Southern League was against Chatham Town, a game which they won.
The club tried three time before the war to win the FA Cup having reached the final but loosing the first two but winning the third against favorites Wolves in a convincing 4-1 victory. World War II put a stop to the league and all cups. Because of this Portsmouth hold the distinction of holding the FA Cup for the longest consecutive time during the war.
It would be another 69 years until the club would win the cup again in 2008.
When the football started up again after the war in 1946 Portsmouth were laundered to retain the FA Cup. They didn't. They were knocked out in the semi's. BUT they did win the league that year and thus became the one of five clubs to retain the title after they won it in 1939.
Portsmouth's fortunes would falter over the next decade with the club falling as low as the then third division.
It would be in the eighties that the then club chairman John Deacon sold the club to ex-QPR chairman Jim Gregory.
Financial troubles had always plagued the club and from the eighties through to the nineties, with managers Alan Ball and Jim Smith the club struggled.
During the mid nineties the club was sold for one pound to ex England Coach Terry Venables.
Portsmouth enjoyed some success but didn't do anything of substance. for the a while and fell again into financial troubles. Surviving the last days of many seasons in the first division.
The club nearly died in the last nineties until it was bought by Milan Mandarić, who injected the club with its much needed income and the club begun to flourish.
With Harry Redknapp at the helm of the club now the club won promotion to the Premier League in 2002. Since their promotion they have survived and this year won the coveted FA Cup final at Wemblely Stadium in London in May 2008 and a place in the UEFA Cup next year, the first time the club has been in Europe in their long history.
The club is renowned for their strong and often loyal fan base.
The club plays at Fratton Park. And is one of the oldest stadiums in the league. It still installs the old styles of football from yester year. . NO executive boxes and until recently no roof on the away end.
The club has a great future ahead of them. With a new owner Alexandre Gaydamak and a bank roll following their FA Cup win, the clubs future looks as bright as the star on their crest that adorns their chest.
PLAY UP POMPEY!
