Poping My Blogging Cherry
June 11th 2008 07:09
So here it is... my first blog. So what makes me want to do this? What makes me think that what I have to say about music matters? The truth is it doesn't. The thing about music is everyone has an opinion on it and everyone thinks that their opinion is a valid one. When it comes to science, wine, or anything remotely manly (football, hunting okay anything that requires co ordination) my opinion is non existent. I don't put it forward because I know chances are someone in the room has a far greater understanding of the subject than I do. If Johnny McDorky wants to tell me about climate change, even though I have a reasonable grasp of it. I'm still going to take on board his views if he's done his homework. Music is different than all of this, it’s about taste, it's about a person's own preference. What's gold to one person is total shit to another. And if you notice with music, if someone dislikes something it's rarely "oh it's not to my taste or it's good but it’s not my thing". It's usually "ah that band is rubbish" or "I would rather die than listen to that again" (mmm too harsh?)
We can look at this in many ways, one that music evokes such passion in people that they form a deep love for their likes and an even deeper loath for their dislikes. I would love for this to be the case. I would love to look at life with my glasses on half full. Yet the little pessimist in me that is always getting in the way (the same little guy that prevents me from watching grey anatomy, I mean come on who talks like that?). My other side keeps reminding me that music is an art for everyone. It's for all people and not everyone is going to look at it and articulate it like me. The new MGMT album for example, I see how my friends love it; I see how many people enjoy it. Some of the songs I like and occasionally find my feet tapping to. Yet it just hasn't grabbed me. It's not on high rotation on my ipod because well... it's just not my thing. I'm not going to say its shithouse; I'm not going to pay it out simply because I don't dig it. Give me a couple of month and my inner teenage girl might change her mind and run with the fad. But for now it's not going to be the first record I throw on at a party. With music everyone is an expert, everyone is a critic, everyone is Johnny McDorky.
So it's just my luck the one of the only things I have an interest for (apart from collecting used cotton buds that I clean my ears with and storing them in the bottom of my bathroom draw for futher study, okay that's another blog people) is something that pretty much everybody has an interest in. No matter how many albums I listen to, no matter how broad I think my music tastes are, what I think and what I believe is going to be disregarded by so many people. So why do it? Why Blog about it? Many reasons, firstly with the hope that Rachel Bilson will read this, love my wit and fall in love with me (I'm not one of those freaks that are obsessed celebrities by the way. I just know in my heart that we are meant to be together and that nothing will stop that). Secondly some people might read this and go "wow I totally thought that too when I listened to that album or Yeah I was at that gig and they did blow". Mostly I want to do this because I have watched pretty much every TV show on DVD and I need something to fill my time. There are only so many showers less and sleepless weekends a man can spend playing guitar hero before he starts getting sad. So I hope you enjoy, if you can look past the spelling mistakes, unrelated brackets and the conclusion being a far different topic than the intro. If you hate it then be prepared for some abuse coming your way. It is the internet and if you can't slag people off then what's the point of having it.
Enjoy
Nathan
