Mediterranean Union Launched

July 16th 2008 08:56
The Mediterranean Union launched on Sunday brought 43 nations on the table aimed to work for a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction. The objective is to "pursue a mutually and effectively verifiable Middle East Zone free of weapons of mass destruction."

The nations, represented at the summit, include Israel, Syria, the Palestinian Territories and countries across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, agreed to "consider practical steps to prevent the proliferation" of weapons of mass destruction. The statement said that includes nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and their delivery systems.

However, it was unclear how the signatories would enforce the pledge.

The crushing defeat of the US Admin Party to the Democrats in the Mid-term election leave no doubt about their meaning. Why do you think the American electorate rebuked Bush and in a way "fired" Rumsfeld? Here's some of the reasons that comes to mind :

* A rejection of Bush Iraq war policy. The continuing bloodletting in Iraq drove the voters to demand a change.

* The incompetence and delayed response to the hurricane "Katrina" catastrophe.

* Sex crime issues that hounded key Republican officials.

There must be other factors that marked the shift of powers in the US political landscape. Dems now have total control of Congress. The departure of Bush' combative Defense Secretary would force the Pres. to adopt a more conciliatory approach to the globe's crisis, a lesson in humility indeed.
