XENA vs. PLUTO – A CONFLICT
November 2nd 2006 14:55
The entire universe was stunned on August 14, 2006. On that day, which was considered one of the unformal decisions of the Internation Astronomical Union (IAU) to demote the planet PLUTO from our solar system. The real culprit behind this was the discovery of another celestial body named XENA. Xena was bigger than Pluto and non-spherical, so the planet Pluto had to make its way. This dilemma between these two celestial bodies made the IAU take a very tough decision to demote the planet Pluto. Ironically, the IAU was the body that deemed Pluto as a planet in 1930.
Now, what is a ‘planet’? Planet is nothing but the celestial body with a remotely spherical body, and which revolves around the Sun and possess a certain volume. Considering all these factors, Pluto cannot be called as a planet. This demotion of Pluto was due to the fact that it failed to meet all the criteria specified to be classified as a planet. The primary factor was that it lacks gravity to clear a path in its orbit. Hence, with all these calculations our dear planet is termed no more.
