How to Spot a High Quality Candle

The use of candles has grown in popularity in the last few years, the swell of home based candle manufacturing attests to this reality. Just look up the term in Google and you will find nearly 50 million sites! This isn’t counting the sites not submitted or the small business not even thinking about online marketing.
EBay is a pretty good source for candles if you are going to take the merchants advertising for the worth.
I find the premium candles are from highly regarded candle shops that understand the candle making process.
Hand pouring is favored over machine molding of a scented candle. The scent of a injection molded candle can’t compare. The process of infusing a candle with scent doesn’t permit compression.
A torrent of imported candles fill the shelves of many a novelty shop and budget web site. They don’t burn evenly and are usually made with compressed middles and a small amount of scented material poured or dipped on the surface. They don’t deliver a quality fragrance; if they cost a buck it’s overpriced.
Candles are burned for multiple reasons, chief among them is the pleasing fragrance given by a superior quality candle. Superior quality wax provides a long burn time with an even burn. The use of very fragrant candles provides a warm cozy glow to any room. I love the aroma of a high quality tropical scented candle, especially during the long winter months or when I’m cooped up for longer periods.
Trimming the wick to ¼ inch and burning for a few hours at a time is recommended for best results, but personally I like to just let the candle glow all evening.
The highest quality candles are hand made from natural waxes, like bee’s wax. A cotton wick is a must. The use of petroleum products like paraffin in candles causes the candle to give off a darker smoke, although it is mixed in regularly small amounts with natural waxes to provide rigidity for molded candles.
The amount of scent retained by a soy wax candle is 1 to 1 ½ ounces per pound. Many shops consider ½ ounce per pound to be a standard. This is the origin of the term triple scented. This phrase is used to describe 1 ½ ounces of scent per lb. of wax. This is the figure that saturation occurs in a soy based candle, at which they begin to leak scent like a wet sponge, a condition called mottling. You will notice small white particles covering the surface of the candle.
