Please Visit The Candy Bar: The Departed
November 2nd 2006 21:37
Released in Australia on the 12th October 2006, The Departed[
is filled with an array of excellent actors, ranging from Matt Damon, Martin Sheen, Leonardo Di Caprio, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin and of course, the joker himself, Jack Nicholson. I don’t know about you, but whenever I see a line up like that I expect greatness.
To be sure, I was not disappointed. I believe the narrative is based on the Chinese television series, Infernal Affairs, and neatly wraps three episodes into one.
Intertwining the two tales of Matt Damon and Leo’s character, Billy Costigan, discovering how they collide is the most impressive part of the film. These two are trained policeman, heading in different paths, one a corrupt detective and the other, a reformed one. Jack Nicholson, plays the godfather type, the protagonist, corrupting and controlling the inner workings of the police force. Well in South Boston, at least. With much of the focus drawn on informers and catching Costello (Jack Nicholson’s character), one cannot help but feel the suspense. Of course, this would not be a hollywood blockbuster without a bit of romance and the love triangle that forms, is a psychologically gripping one. Above this, The Departed, displays a very satirical undercurrent in its writing, with many great lines given to Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg. I was pleasantly entertained and not expecting the dry humour. I recommend all should see this film, if not to see it, then to visit the candy bar!
