Please, stop the music

Watching the Spurs v Suns game this morning and for the first time I noticed something horrific -- San Antonio was playing music DURING play. This may have been happening for a while, but it was the first time I've noticed it. It's one thing to play music during breaks, but during play?
What exactly are you saying about your sport?
I know times are tough and leagues everywhere are desperate to keep fans but this isn't a bad team; it's the San Antonio freaking Spurs. The team that contends every year and regularly puts out a quality line-up that contains one of the 10 best players in the history of basketball. Is that not enough? Are you really telling me that fans would stop coming if the music stopped?
The AFL too has gone down the music road in recent years -- though thankfully only during breaks ... so far.
I probably went the Teltra Dome (which shall henceforth be known as "The Dome" or "Docklands") 25 times last year and I must have heard Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl 75 times.
Now, the AFL has a strong recent history of treating its fans with contempt (a bigger issue for another day) but do they really think playing music has any impact on the number of fans that go through the gate? Have they researched this?
I know we live in a world where Twenty20 is taking over Test cricket, and iPods, SMS and TV on DVD mean that many of us have the attention span of a kitten but surely most of us still go to sporting events to watch sport. Right?
The mid-quarter breaks should be used to dash to the toilet, grab a pie, bitch/boast about how poorly/well your team is playing, talk with friends or fellow supporters, read the record or paper, or (heaven forbid) to sit/stand without distraction for ten freaking minutes.
I've never met anyone who cared even a little about the music that played during games. And I can't imagine anyone would miss it if it was gone.
So please, AFL, NBA, NBL, ICC and anyone else who thinks their fans are incapable of sitting through the very sport that they chose to attend, I beg you, stop the the music.
