This blog takes a hard look at the Steelers. I'm not one to shy away from criticism when it's warranted, and will give plenty of accolades when earned. Read on, and enjoy!

Pit 23 Indy 20

The only thing that salvaged this game from being a debacle was earning the late win. Otherwise, there's nothing from my perspective to celebrate.

The offensive line, when players aren't dropping like flies, can't run block, can't pass block, and can't pick up blitzes. Not good. This is a bad bunch, maybe the worst our fans have seen in recent years, and spells nothing good. Not only is the injury bug again striking the Steeler's weakest unit, but again it's hitting the tackles - the one position they can't afford.

Normally I am not a defender nor attacker of Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians. This puts me in the definite majority in Pittsburgh. Today, however, I am miffed. Since Arians took the position, the Steelers can't run. Time after time, right up the middle, right into the teeth of the defense and nothing. It's got to be a combination of lousy blocking (not his fault), lousy blocking patterns (his fault) and lousy timing of run calls (totally his fault). I might join the chorus of fans ardently calling for his departure.

Speaking of lines...what's happened to this defensive line? They were getting mashed by the Colts. Aaron Smith might have hit that point. Casey Hampton, too. I now understand better what Warren Sapp is seeing...and not only that, Larry Foote spelling James Farrior often tells me that Farrior's not entirely up to par. The defensive line is having its issues, that's for sure, and they're not generating any pressure. Two teams with good lines have run the ball well on Pittsburgh. That's cause for huge concern. Maybe terror.

What's good? The usual. Ben, despite an awful interception. The sack-fumbles were both blind-siders and yeah, he should be more careful with the ball but it's Ben, and all Steeler fans have to live by his actions. So we'll not get too uptight over those turnovers. Wallace and Brown were great. Ward was quiet, Miller solid. Rashard was tip-toeing too much, but in his defense had no holes. Troy was insane on defense, as was James Harrison.

All told, a win is a win is a win. But it does nothing to dispel notions this team is too old.

They have gotten progressively worse at running the ball since Russ Grimm left. This season is going to be a struggle much like 2006 and 2009.

The Steelers won, but it was obviously not a very convincing win. What startled me the most was how ineffective their run defense was at times. My biggest worry with this team is the offensive line, because Mendenhall just can't get anything going with the lack of talent up front. Jonathan Scott might just be the worst tackle in the NFL, and the other guys aren't too good either.
