Pistons Continue To Roll On A Flat Tire

November 14th 2012 19:08
-Jason Holdinski

As an avid Detroit sports fan since youth, itís hard to watch the Detroit Pistons start another season like this. As of now they are on a 0-8 slide, and the only team without a victory besides the 0-6 Washington Bullets. Itís been nasty for the Pistons since Chauncey Billups and Rip Hamilton departed. The only remaining player from the 2004 championship team is Tayshaun Prince. Tayshaun has had a great career with the Pistons, but is definitely winding it down, evident in his 11.8 PPG.

A couple of bright spots on the Pistons roster have been the play of rookies Kyle Singler and Andre Drummond. Although they are only getting about 20 minutes of playing time per game, they are averaging 7.9 and 6.5 PPG respectively. The Pistons are banking on one these two to breakout this season and eventually replace Tayshaun when he retires.

The foundation of this team for years to come is in the hands of point guard Brandon Knight. College basketball fans remember him lighting it up at Kentucky. Brandon was drafted 8th overall by the Pistons in the 2011 draft. Last year Brandon averaged 12.8 PPG. This year so far his shot has been a little off shooting only 35.7%. Once he gets in the groove though, we should see his 11 PPG rise drastically. The nice looking stat is his 6.5 dishes per game. Last year, it was just under 4. His improvement is imperative if the Pistons want to start chalking in Wís on the schedule.

Although Greg Monroe leads the team in scoring (15.4 PPG) and rebounding (8.8 RPG), the Pistons desperately need a big man up front. If the Pistons continue the trend of losing and end up with the first pick in the 2013 draft, look for them to draft the 6í11 Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel. Although this season is still early, this is what I foresee.

For now, the Pistons will continue to struggle during their rebuilding stage, but will also show glimpses of their near future. Piston fans be patient, a title isnít in the cards for about 4-5 years. But on the same note, donít be a bandwagon rider. Stick with your team and watch them grow. It will make the championship year that much more gratifying.
