Flying High Over Philly

March 3rd 2011 03:10
I absolutely hate flying. For years I avoided it at all cost. In fact, I hadn't ridden in a plane for probably 13 years! My boss came to me one day and said that I had to go to Philly. Well, it was either fly to Philly or lose my job. So, off I went.

So far this story seems somewhat bland, but you'll get the picture here shortly. Anyway, I phlew to Philly and white nuckled it pretty much. Luckily from my home to Philly it's only about an hour and a half flight. I got off the plane and had a nice couple of days there. I dreaded flying back for every second of my trip and when the day finally came to board the plane for my trip back, I felt sick. My stomach hurt, my palms were sweaty and I had a horrid feeling of dread. This despite taking an Ativan before hand!

So, I buckled myself into the seat and took a deap breath. Nothing I could do, once the plane takes off I'm stuck there until the plane lands. My boss sat next to me so I couldn't freak out and cry and run down the aisle screaming, "We're all going to DIIIIIIE!". I noticed that next to us on the other side of the aisle was a young mother (no older than 20 herself) with a small boy (he was only 3). The young mom (who by the way looked like the height of trailer trashiness) said that this would be her little ones first flight. I figured the poor little one would be scared and felt sorry for the young mother. Surely the little guy would cry and make a fuss! The time came for take off, I gripped the arms of the seat and braced myself for the long flight. As we speeded down the runway and the plane started to take off, I looked at the little boy and heard a giant WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOO! That little boy flung his fists in the air and yelled with all his might "WEEEEEEEEEEEE, WOOOOOOHOOOOOO, YAYAYAY!" and did so for 5 whole minutes! He had a huge grin on his face and loved every single minute of that take off! Boy, was that a great diversion for little ole scared as hell me!

Shouldn't we all look at life like that little boy looked at flying? With delight and excitement rather than with fear and loathing? I was proud of myself for facing my fear and I was happy that the little boy sitting next to me was there to teach me such an important lesson! Thanks God for taking care of me and showing me another lesson!

After the initial take off the little boy sat back in the seat and slept the entire flight. I'm definitely taking lessons from him next time!

Afraid of Flying and Loving It!

February 26th 2011 14:46
Dear Blog,
I didn't want you to think I forgot you! Heavens NO! I just wanted to let you know where I have been! I was out of town to Philadelphia on a business trip.

I went to Philadelphia and had a great time! If you know anything about me, you will know that I am TERRIFIED of flying. Not just a little scared, absolutely petrified! I have avoided it for years and years. One time, when coming back from Texas, I had a horrible experience. The plane dropped while in flight several feet! It was a turbulent flight and very scary and I haven't flown much since then. I actually have avoided flying for around 19 years!

Well, now my boss said I had to fly to a marketing meeting in Philadelphia. What could I do? It was either get on a plane or lose my job. I figured I'd go about this whole flying thing with a little different attitude. First, I gave up control. I figure there are absolutely thousands of flights going on at any given minute and you rarely hear of any crashes. I gave up control to the pilot and trusted him to fly the plane safely. I also took a mild anti-anxiety medication. This didn't keep me from being afraid, but it took the edge off. Then, the first round of the trip, I counted backwards from one thousand. This kept my mind from impending doom and on something else.

I was very proud of myself. I was afraid, but I didn't freak out. I made to Philadelphia and back without a scratch on me. I had a nice flight both ways regardless of a tiny bit of turbulence each way. I am glad that I bit the bullet and took my business trip. Maybe Paris next time?

I Hate This Weather

February 22nd 2011 00:10
The weather pretty much just sucks in NW Ohio right now. We had an ice storm last night, lost power this morning, now it's snowing. We have about 5 inches of snow on top of ice. The trees are all bending and breaking because of the weight.

We have a trip planned to Florida the end of March and it can't come soon enough!

I hate the weather right now. Please God, at least close the Detroit Airport tomorrow so I don't have to go to Philly. Amen!

TEENAGERS! AGGHHH!

February 19th 2011 13:15
First, I would like to say that I have three children. I have a daughter who is 23 and is going to graduate school. She is well rounded, has never been involved in drugs/alcohol/smoking and is going to college on a full scholarship. I have a 19 year old son who played baseball all through high school and was offered a full ride baseball scholarship, he's had a few bumps in the road, but is a good kid. I have an 11 year old who is a soccer player and has been diagnosed with ADHD, she's a very good kid, has to work hard at school though. None of my children have children, have been involved with gangs, have been involved with unsavory individuals, have gotten into trouble with violence. I feel I have raised my children well and would like to give you all a tiny bit of advice.

When you have children who are growing into teenagers it's imperative that you know what they're doing at all times. I think sometimes it's even more important to keep tabs on your teenagers than it is for you to keep strict tabs on your 8 year old. By this I mean, an 8 year old usually will not think of doing the things that a 15 year old might think of.

Success!

February 19th 2011 12:51
It's my job to sometimes meet with other individuals who are also "marketers" for another company. I met with 4 other women at a really nice restaurant in this area. We spoke of what we met about and then made small talk over excellent chicken alfredo and home baked bread and salad. One of the women that I met with has a 4 year old son and was having major problems with him sleeping in his own bed, staying asleep, requiring someone to sleep with him, etc.

If you've been reading my blogs, you'll notice that I wrote a section about this same subject. This woman that I met with, we'll call her Carrie, works full time, her husband is laid off and she has a lot of guilt because she's not home often. I listened attentively to all of her problems with her son. I then shared with her the steps that I outlined in my previous blog. I told her to aquire a routine and to never stray from this. This is a very important part of letting your child know that it's time for bed. This routine also lets your child have time to relaxe before bed time. Just the small act of reading a very short book, sipping on a cup of milk, or getting a favorite stuffed animal ready for bed takes un-active concentration. This allows the child to focus on something else besides the fact that their parents want them to go to bed. If you go through this same routine at the same time each night your little one will then think, "Mommy/Daddy is giving me a bath, I'm putting on my jammies, we're reading my bunny/firetruck book, i'm getting bunny/doggy ready for bed, it's time for me to go to bed too". Small children cannot tell time, but they can know what time of the day it is by their routine.

What's the Answer?

February 18th 2011 02:37
What do you think would be a good solution to the healthcare situation in the USA?

I took my daughter to the doctor the other day. We have really crappy insurance, we basically pay a bunch of money for $5000 deductible insurance. So, said doctor's appointment wasn't covered at all. I was talking to the receptionist at the doc's office. I told her our insurance was pretty shitty (of course not in those words, but you get the drift) and she told me her insurance was pretty bad also. Now, she works for Paramount which is a huge healthcare organization. You would think that at least they would have decent healthcare. The receptionist shared with me that hardly anyone has good healthcare anymore. It's certainly not like it used to be. I used to have excellent insurance, we paid a small amount, of course the company you worked for supplied the insurance. When I had my first and second child we paid nothing out of pocket at all. By the time I had my third one we paid several hundred dollars out of pocket. If I had another child today we would probably end up paying the entire thing (up to 5000 dollars) then we would have to pay 30 percent after that.

Icey Cola

February 17th 2011 01:45
Cold and fresh and deliciously slippery. Icey cold shivery chunks of frozen wetness clink into the inside of my glass. I move the glass in a fast circle to hear the ice jingle against the smooth glass. I reach inside the glass with a finger and fish out a wet piece of icey goodness. I pop it in my mouth and suck on it and crunch it with my teeth letting it melt into a cold puddle on my tongue. I slowly pour bubbly cola into the glass and watch as the bubbles and brown liquid intermingle with the ice to form a cold, frosty, fizzy amber drink. I raise the glass to my lips and tip it high to let the fizzy, cold drink slide down my throat like a small child sliding down a water slide. I drink the liquid like it's the last drink I will ever have and feel the bubbles burst into my stomach with a splash. I smile and sigh and savor the cold, wet glass against my warm fingertips. Delicious.

This technique is only going to work if you don't give in. I have raised 3 children, was a child care provider for 6 years and had 5 children under the age of 4 who all napped at the same time. I know what I'm talking about and if you do all of these things I describe and DO NOT give in even once, you will soon be sitting relaxing at your child's bed time.

If you're reading this post, your nights and sometimes days are filled with you being tired and your children not getting enough quality sleep. Do you try to arrange your day around your child napping? Do you go to bed early to make sure your child gets enough sleep? Do you have your child/children in bed with you which makes it so you are not getting good sleep. The list goes on and on

The Feeling of Love

February 14th 2011 11:21
Warm and enveloping like a silky down comforter love will surround you with warmth and security. Love makes ones soul sing with laughter and happiness. If you feel loved you feel complete and still and absolutely content that you're in the very best place emotionally. If you are in love, just the thought of that person can make your stomach have butterflies and your heart skip a beat. Love like that makes you crave that person like one would crave water after being in the dessert without it for a week. Love is gentle and kind and is everything you need it to be. Happy Valentine's Day![/COLOR
