Flying High Over Philly
March 3rd 2011 03:10
I absolutely hate flying. For years I avoided it at all cost. In fact, I hadn't ridden in a plane for probably 13 years! My boss came to me one day and said that I had to go to Philly. Well, it was either fly to Philly or lose my job. So, off I went.
So far this story seems somewhat bland, but you'll get the picture here shortly. Anyway, I phlew to Philly and white nuckled it pretty much. Luckily from my home to Philly it's only about an hour and a half flight. I got off the plane and had a nice couple of days there. I dreaded flying back for every second of my trip and when the day finally came to board the plane for my trip back, I felt sick. My stomach hurt, my palms were sweaty and I had a horrid feeling of dread. This despite taking an Ativan before hand!
So, I buckled myself into the seat and took a deap breath. Nothing I could do, once the plane takes off I'm stuck there until the plane lands. My boss sat next to me so I couldn't freak out and cry and run down the aisle screaming, "We're all going to DIIIIIIE!". I noticed that next to us on the other side of the aisle was a young mother (no older than 20 herself) with a small boy (he was only 3). The young mom (who by the way looked like the height of trailer trashiness) said that this would be her little ones first flight. I figured the poor little one would be scared and felt sorry for the young mother. Surely the little guy would cry and make a fuss! The time came for take off, I gripped the arms of the seat and braced myself for the long flight. As we speeded down the runway and the plane started to take off, I looked at the little boy and heard a giant WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOO! That little boy flung his fists in the air and yelled with all his might "WEEEEEEEEEEEE, WOOOOOOHOOOOOO, YAYAYAY!" and did so for 5 whole minutes! He had a huge grin on his face and loved every single minute of that take off! Boy, was that a great diversion for little ole scared as hell me!
Shouldn't we all look at life like that little boy looked at flying? With delight and excitement rather than with fear and loathing? I was proud of myself for facing my fear and I was happy that the little boy sitting next to me was there to teach me such an important lesson! Thanks God for taking care of me and showing me another lesson!
After the initial take off the little boy sat back in the seat and slept the entire flight. I'm definitely taking lessons from him next time!
