Desire to aspire

So i started a new job...new faces..new responsibilities, and new expectations. I started thinking about the underlying desire inside us, that compells us seek praise and aproval from our peers. It goes back to when we were kids; we would rush to finish our work first, shoot our hands up at the mention of a class discussion, and present our acomplisments to our superiors, seeking the praise that makes us all feel apreciated. But if there's one thing i've learnt from striving to be the best, is that it's an ongoing battle to stay afloat; the more work you complete, the more you shall recieve
So, here's a question to think about:
Do you personally strive always, for the summit, or prefer to skulk in the shadows of your peers and remain in mediocre land..? =P
