Picking the All Time Greatest Movie Stars

July 7th 2008 05:55
One of my grand obsessions is creating lists based solely on my personal prejudices. I have a list for just about everything. But it's not really the concept of a list that intrigues me, its the idea of numbers. You know, like who's first, second, third, etc., and a movie star list is just about my favorite type of list to ponder. My only problem is trying to figure out who should be on it and who shouldn't. That's why I particularly dislike limiting my lists to say 100. Who in the world can choose only 100 best of anything? The top 10? Forget about it! Obviously my lists can occasionally be endless.

I also love the best pictures lists, except those that inevitably choose Citizen Kane as the best film of all time. Admittedly, CK is a good film, but the best? Personally, though it may be interesting it's hardly the best in terms of theme, even if it makes the academic elite swoon, or acting, though I am partial to Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles, or plot, or cinematography, or anything else. I do consider it a great picture, but a lot of great pictures have been made in the 67 years since it was made.

Enough of my venting, let's move on to the heart of the matter, MY FAVORITE MOVIE STARS!

First, let me completely honest, some of the actors on my list should have probably paid the studios to be in their movies, but who can honestly predict what will float anyone's boat (Godzilla still remains the favorite sci fi pic of all times) or figure out why.

So, after showing my real colors no matter the outcome, I present the Ryunkin list of All TIME GREAT ATHLETES...make that aCTORS with a small a.

John Cusack(the man who always works the jobs I would kill for), Ken Watanabe (loved his suicidal samurai), Peter Lorre (weird man), William Powell (smoooooth), Humphrey Bogart (quirky fascinating, Clint Eastwood (a genius if he stays away from acting), Kim Novak va va vooooom), Audrey Hepburn (get me off her), Cary Grant (my gay hero), Will Smith (the man can do it all, catch his Ali), Denzel Washington (fascinating charmer), Omar Shariff (where's my camel?), James Mason (another smoooothie), Warner Oland (brilliant actor), Mos Def (I love his weirdness), if anything I'm an eclectic freak, don't you think? Daniel Craig (great Bond but not much else), Anne Hathaway (classy if not sexy), Emily Blunt (hubba hubba), Patrick McGoohan (I wanted to be him), Patrick MacNee (ditto), Toby Jones (best Truman Capote I've ever seen), Roscoe Lee Browne (smooooth), Jeremy Brett (the greatest Holmes), Michael Keaton (best Batman), Randolph Scott (my first screen hero), Sidney Greenstreet (the greatest, most sophisticated creep in films and my hero), Dick Powell (great private eye, better than Bogie), Gene Tierney (heart be still), Jack Nicholson (my current favorite), Lee Van Cleef (he looks my uncle), Johnny Depp (creeping great), Morgan Freeman (a complete actor), Clifton Webb (as queer as they come but fascinating---could I be a switch hitter?), Robert Wagner (I'd give a million dollars to be RJ for a day), Alan Ladd (come back Shane, all is forgiven), Jack Palance (I always wanted to be built like either Jack or Woody, unfortunately I'm 4" shorter than both of them and 70 pounds lighter than Woody), Woody Strode, Gary Cooper (do not forsake me Gracie), Sean Connery (no comment, I'm running out of gas), Diana Rigg (another hubba hubba), Grace Kelly (Not a hubba hubba, more like an Oooooo la la), Steve McQueen (hot rod cool), Robert Downey Jr. (the most fascinating drug addict I've ever known), Antonio Banderas (believe it or not, the man can actually sing), Ricardo Montalban (quick, close the borders and hide the women), Craig Stevens (cool, man, cool), Skip Homeier (a childhood hero), Jackie Gleason (one of my favorite everything), Teri Hatcher (down boy, down), William Shatner (my pick of Shatner comes with a disclaimer that should protect from lawsuits and vampires), Myrna Loy (what would Powell be without her?), Meg Ryan (get me off her), and Zachary Scott (have you noticed that I've put an awful lot of weasels on this list?), to name a few.

I have to admit, having reread my Oscar-worthy work, that a few of my faves are not on imy list because of their acting skills. Guess which ones.

I included Shatner because, though he may not have the acting chops of Pacino, who I consider vastly overrated, or De Niro, who couldn't have gotten arrested in Hollywood before the 60s, he's a hell of a lot funnier. His Denny Crane is wonderfully silly. He also has the good sense to star in films and television series that people actually watch, which Pacino and De Niro have often forgetten to do lately.

AND...if there's anything that you must understand about moi it's this, I HATE PRETENSION. And though Pacino and De Niro may not be pretentious, their fans often are.

Stay tuned my friend, because if my favorite actors list had you rolling in the aisles then my favorite movies list should send you to the emergency room.
