Phil Steele Has OU Winning It All?!?!
June 2nd 2010 15:05
Now even though The Crusader is a bit biased toward the Sooners and is, in fact, an OU alumnus, even he was surprised to see that Phil Steele, a well-known college football analyst and author of his annual College Football Preview, had OU at number 1 in the country in 2010 and picked them to win it all next season.
Really? Truly? After losing five games last season, Steele will go with the Sooners?
Now, Phil is no idiot by any sense of the word. In 2008 he precisely picked Florida to win it all even though Georgia was the preseason number 1, and he defends his decision to thrust OU up on the highest of pedestals, citing their great out-of-conference schedule, the amount of talent they return, and the strength they have built as a unit last season when they were forced to grow up fast after losing so many starters.
He also cites how often in the past it has come down to a 3 or 4-loss team winning the National Championship.
In his rankings, Ohio State comes out at second, then Alabama, TCU, and Nebraska, consecutively. Perhaps the biggest surprise is Texas coming out at number 11.
Only time will tell if Steele is proven right again, but for the moment, Sooner Nation stands pleasantly surprised and remains optimistic.
Thoughts?
