The UniJobs Lecturer of the Year Award: Highlighting and rewarding excellence in Australia’s teaching staff

Established in 2007 and now in its fourth year, the UniJobs Lecturer of the Year Award aims to reward the efforts of outstanding teaching or teachers.

Nominated by staff and students, the award is a true reflection on the attitudes and feelings of university communities, and is a real indication of teaching staff that have gone above and beyond in their efforts to create a better learning environment.

Both staff and students can nominate, for the 2010 award at www.lectureroftheyear.com.au

Over 65,000 votes were cast last year from every university in Australia.

UniJobs Director Jarrod Kanizay believes that the number of votes reflects the admiration that both students and peers feel about their university.

“One can compare the award to a Gallup poll, it plumbs the depths of student sentiment, and those who attract the greatest commendation are rewarded for their efforts”.

Mr Kanizay also believes that in the spirit of healthy competition, the award helps bring university departments together.

“Using last year’s award as an example, we had calls coming in from the various university faculties asking who was nominated. Everyone involved was exceptionally keen to support their colleagues”.

“Also we found that for students it was an effective way for them to have their voices heard. The majority of votes come from the students themselves, and they play a powerful role in choosing the final top 10 finalists”.

Nominations close on November 30th.

The results will be published on www.lectureroftheyear.com.au and on Australia’s University News Website, www.CampusDaily.com.au, a proud sponsor of the UniJobs Lecturer of the Year Award.

Nominations and more details of the award including past results for each university can be accessed online at www.lectureroftheyear.com.au

I received this in an email today, I know this Orble blog may not be the best place for commercialism in blogs, but if you’re a horse enthusiast and a wine lover than you will love this:

Tyrell’s Wines, the 2010 James Halliday winery of the year, have an exclusive offer for fans of Equine.com.au

Their entire range of old vineyard wines are now only $10 a bottle, which is a huge saving. Plus, if you get a free 1.5L Magnum bottle of Shiraz with every Dozen.

Working as a writer for Equine.com.au, the offer is really only available to viewers of the website, but I’ve posted up the link/order form for any discernable wine lovers out there to get their hands on.

I can honestly tell you, Tyrell’s are actually a pretty fantastic little local Melbourne wine company; their Cab Merlot and their Brut is off the Richter Scale.

Link to the special: The PDF Order form is here

Link to the Tyrells website: http://www.tyrrells.com.au/

Like I said, I don’t often plug anything, but who is going to pass up cheap wine?

What is Dememntia ?

June 22nd 2010 07:38
Dementia is not a disease, but rather an umbrella term for a variety of symptoms that may accompany or indicate certain diseases or conditions. Today over 60 different conditions are known to cause dementia symptoms. Symptoms may include impaired memory and confusion, difficulty in performing day-to-day or familiar tasks, and changes in personality, mood, and behaviour. When caused by disease or injury, dementia is usually irreversible; however, the symptoms may be reversible when caused by treatable conditions, such as: dehydration, constipation, infection, vitamin deficiencies and imbalances, pain, medication poisoning, brain tumours or depression.

It’s an odd thing to be eating lunch while at the same time flicking through a horsing magazine that proudly boasts the tagline, “Imported Frozen Sperm Services”.

Too bad I was eating ravioli

There’s a definitive air of pageantry in the equine industry; men and women in tight pants awkwardly position hundreds of kilograms of horse flesh between their legs and use it to jump over bars and bars of hurdles that are precariously stacked higher than the entire US Olympic basketball team.

But no matter how odd it seems on the surface, the pomp and sophistication of the Equine industry inherited its current state of being from the undeniable history of people on horseback

Phil-O-Seffy Explained...

May 10th 2010 02:19
So you’re probably all wondering about the name of the blog; Phil-O-Seff-ising.

For those of you who were not wondering, feel free to skip this lengthy explanation like previews on VHS tapes, something which I’m told is actually not very good for the life expectancy of the tape itself

The CCOA had commenced the inquiry for Australian Aged Care on the 21/04/2010. After rocking the boat for 8 months, the Australian government went ahead with the decision to have a commission.
By April 2011 we will be having a time table of the government plan that CCOA will be conducting. While Rudd government’s trying to keep its promises, the ageing population still awaits on getting the best possible facilities and treatments.
However fragile, the aged care system is still workable, and while an apathetic population simply shrug and automatically rattle off a list of generic ant government slogans, I was busy trying to find a solution

Damned if we do...

November 13th 2009 03:48
Many Australian universities have begun targeting students who display poor English communication skills and English grammar, all in an effort to increase the quality of international university graduates.

Australia’s higher education export industry is reportedly worth over $15.5 billion, and universities are now fearful that poorly performing students will tarnish Australia’s reputation as a prime export destination

I'm suddenly reminded of a Monty Python sketch...

"Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.

And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you."
