Stranger than fiction. Or what I call, ‘Will Ferrell does serious’. And he does it very well. He plays Harold Crick, a neurotic auditor who relies on his wrist-watch for all life’s decisions.
Emma Thompson plays a writer with a problem. She is attempting to finish her book and needs to kill Harold Crick. Yes, Harold Crick is the character in her book but he is real. Intrigued? You should be.

We follow Harold Crick as he starts to hear a woman narrating his every move. It is great watching Will Ferrell go crazy. Not in an ‘old school’ kind of way but more serious, and more believable. Dustin Hoffman joins Ferrell as a lecturer trying to help out Harold with his problem and find out just what is going on and is hilarious in a supporting role. Maggie Gyleenhaal also plays Will Ferrell’s love interest beautifully - I dare any male to watch this film and not fall in love with her character. Mean at first, and all the better for it in the context of the movie. I won’t ruin any more of the film, it wouldn’t be right to.

This is the kind of film that I can (and have) watched again and again. Therefore it does exactly what is required.

Donnie Darko

The story of a young, troubled boy who goes ‘sleep-golfing’ one night. The same night a jet engine crashes through his house. Then he’s visited by a giant bunny-rabbit who tells him when the world is going to end. No, I’m not kidding. I would be a fool to ruin the rest of the plot for you.

And it has a stellar cast. Something very surprising for what is, an independent film. Somehow I think they must have known this was not, just another movie.

It sounds like a twisted children’s story and maybe it is. It is also the basis for one of the best cult movies of all time. It is so deliciously twisted that everyone seems to love it more and more with repeated viewings. Scenes regarding Smurfs - ‘they’re asexual, they don’t even have reproductive organs under those little white pants’, being a victim of fear and the hungry-hungry hippos are quite frankly, amazing and don’t seem like they could be in any other movie.

If someone asked me which is the one movie I should see I would recommend this one without a doubt. Funny, sad and completely disturbing at times, all the film does is make you want more. Watch it. Then watch it again.

I Am Legend

Will Smith. Once the Fresh-Prince of Bel-Air, now the most bankable actor in Hollywood. How did this happen? Truth? He is an exceptional actor with the look to match and he chooses his roles perfectly. This film however, is a major let-down. The story of how a cure for cancer became a virus which ravages New York City and leaves the victims in a zombie-like state was a great book and could have been a great film too. Unfortunately, the effects in this film seem to overshadow Smith’s exceptional acting whenever they appear. And the effects are poor, especially for a movie as promising as this.

In comparison with other ‘near-apocalypse’ films such as 28 Weeks Later, this just does not even compare. The film would have benefited greatly from using real people for the infected rather than CGI-based effects. Granted, the viewing of a deserted New York is something to behold but maybe the movie would have benefited from a more human touch to really make the audience feel for Smith’s character.

I read that Will Smith tried to adopt the dog used in this movie but was unsuccessful with the current owner. Seriously, the best dog in Hollywood. Shame about the rest of the film.
