Peter Brock’s Legacy
September 11th 2006 03:14
Much is being said and written about Peter Brock’s place in the memory of Australians and, as services are being arranged and conducted, many who knew him personally can give their thoughts. There have been comments regarding his contribution to the cause of making vehicles safer and encouraging young drivers to respect their cars and their own abilities. All this is worthwhile and there is no doubt that both in changes to cars and through his words, lives have been saved.
There is going to be an inquest into the accident using a “black box” installed in his car that may help find the cause. Perhaps that too will help to make changes to save lives. However, I do not feel that it will tell us much more than we already can know as to what caused the accident.
The fact that this road had a particularly dangerous corner is certainly a factor, but all who drive in the country – whether they have mainly city or country experience need to be aware that such situations exist on many country roads. The unexpected, such as kangaroos, fallen trees, large puddles and loose gravel on the side of the road are elements that drivers face every day.
Perhaps the greatest legacy Peter Brock can leave us all is the sad and severe lesson – if the King of the Mountain and one of the best drivers in the world can die on a country road when he is tired, going fast and unsure of the road – how much more care should the rest of us mere mortals take when we venture out onto the roads.
Let his legacy live on – don’t drive tired, don’t speed and be aware that the road can have unexpected hazards - so drive defensively – and certainly don’t add alcohol and drugs to this mix. If we follow these rules, Peter Brock did not die in vain.
