Personal Space

What is up with some people who get into your personal space and start talking? The conversations get awkward as you slowly back away whilst they almost back you into a corner. I wonder what determines social space?
Close talkers as they are known are very socially awkward, but it gets worse if they suffer from bad breath or are people who spit when they talk. What can be done in these situations?
Maybe these people have a fear of not being listened to unless they are up close and preaching their conversation to you?
Being someone from a more traditional conservative family my personal space is probably larger than someone used to close physical contact. I am thinking that females are usually more close knit and affectionate, which causes them to enjoy close contact/conversation.
I think it also depends on how well you know someone.
Do people from more emotionally expressive populations like Europe have a smaller personal space?
