Breast milk storage bags are the cheapest items to store your precious gold liquid in. You can purchase a pack of 25 or 45 bags in one box for around 5 to 10 dollars each instead of purchasing a four breastmilk store plastic bottles which go for twice the storage bags. Gerber's Seal N' Go breastmilk bags are pre-sterilized, self standing bags with a leak proof zipper seal.
There are several down fall to these bags and I will start with the leak proof zipper seal. The leak proof seal is not leak proof at all. I have had my heart broken to see my baby's breast milk leaking in a bowl of warm filtered water in a bowl or running down the drain when placed in a clean kitchen sink with running water. I have and my husband have correctly zipped these bags and stored them in the freezer and deep freezer correctly and when its time to take a bag of breast milk out of the freeze to thaw out. My breast milk is leaking through the zipper seal or the bottom or the body of the bags themselves. It never fails. My husband out so irritated that he switched to several brands b/c the only stores in Metairie only had breast milk store bags and not the plastic or glass store bottles. We make sure our bags were not over filled and they still leaked.
Breast pumping was the right choice for me since my son didn't know how to latch on because he had a difficult time learning how to suck. I was told my the lactation nurse at East Jefferson General Hospital that my nipple was to large for my son, so I had to use a Medela nipple cover to try to coach my son to latch on to my nipples and learn to suck the nipple back and front in his mouth. It was trying since I was bed ridden for over 9 months due to a botched epidural. This resulted in three vertebrae dislocated in my lower lumber spine. So getting up every three to six hour breast pumping was hard and there were time I had to miss or try a tad later instead of what was scheduled. Even though I had an irregular breast follow than new mom, I was pumping out 1 oz to 5 oz of milk my first day at the hospital. I was told that wasn't normal for new moms at all. Ever drop of breast milk counted and Gerber's product let me down. It's man made of course, things happen and we move on. Right.
The product is suppose to be pre-sterilized and I have did any scientific experience to proof or disproof this claim, so we will move on. As for the self standing claim, I beg to differ. These bags didn't stand the test of time standing on their lonesome. I may have experienced four to five bags out of a pack that stood on their own. Whether just stored breast milk in them or taken out of the freezer, these bags never self stood on there own. They always flopped on the counter top surface esp just thawed out storage bags.
Another important key that Gerber missed was stating if the bags are BPA free. BPA can lead to development problems in babies and children. It has been linked to cancer and sexual reproduction organ issues such has developing quicker than usual. I don't know about you but I would like my daughter and son to stay children as long as they can. They are so may issues in the would right now that is going against that. I don't need any help form any unnecessary chemicals for my young daughter to become womanish.
I don't recommended Gerber Seal N' Go bags. I really don't recommended storing breast milk in bags at all. Bottles esp Glass or HPDE Bottles are best. But in these hard times and if you reside in a area that does carry or ran out of breast milk storage bottles, you simply have no choice. Just keep and eye on your bags when you are thawing them out. Thaw them in a bowel o0f water and in a sterilized traditional ziploc or Glade bag. Sterilizing these bags are easy just place in a clean stainless steel pot (don't use teflon or teflon related pots, the teflon breaks away from the pot and causes cancer) with warm water and boil for 10-20 minutes. Using the ziploc bags will catch the leaking milk from Gerber's Seal N' Go storage bags.
