Pedestrian
November 5th 2007 00:22
Stepping off the tram, he didn’t even bother to look for traffic as he skipped across the bitumen and onto the footpath. The people around him seemed to move in slow motion, hesitant and unsure of their directions. He knew were he was headed and moved with purpose; unhurried but swift and deliberate.
Stepping around an Indian man in a sandwich board he noticed a familiar face up ahead. Predicting the unrewarding series of platitudes which would ensue if he was recognnised, he swung left behind a tall man in a suit and peeled off down Elizebeth Street. It wasn’t a big detour and the minutes spent in worthless conversation would be minutes lost. He travelled in auto pilot now, weaving through the crowd and anticipating the random movements of the pedestrians ahead that felt clairvoyant.
His mind had never felt clearer.
He had been awake for four days.
