The Dark Knight

After an extremely long, yet extremely impressive marketing campaign, I was a little worried that The Dark Knight would fail to deliver what it had been promising us since May 2007. Although it’s fair to say that the campaign won me over. I couldn’t wait to see it. I’m a huge fan of Batman Begins, the film that reinvented the Batman franchise, making it much more serious than the campy version all Batman fans have had to put up with since Joel Schumacher took the directing reigns over from Tim Burton. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. I was extremely pleased when The Dark Knight was released as it delivered everything that it had promised to us and more.
The story starts off where Batman Begins finished. Batman, Lieutenant Gordon and newly appointed District Attorney, Harvey Dent are trying to take down the mob. Unfortunately they underestimate how serious a threat the new villain, known only as the Joker, really is. The Joker, played by the late Heath Ledger, is a terrifying psychopath clown that is hell-bent on bringing chaos to Gotham City. What results is an action packed thriller that will have everyone on the edge of their seats.
Firstly I must say that the acting in this film is incredible. Christian Bale, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Aaron Eckhart all do a great job, however the show is stolen by Heath Ledger, who’s reinvention of the Joker is truly amazing. When he wasn’t on the screen, I found myself looking forward to when he would return, and also fearing it because each time he returns to the screen, he returns with more vulgar and terrifying acts. I also felt that Michael Caine did a great job in providing comic relief to what is a much darker film than the prequel.
Christopher Nolan, director and co-writer of the film, should be very pleased with this film. He has created a master piece that completely out shines its prequel and all other Batman films. There is only one thing that frustrates me about the film and that is Batman’s throaty voice. It doesn’t really affect the film in any way, however I found it got on my nerves a bit towards the end.
Overall I gave The Dark Knight 4.5/5 with honourable mention going to Heath Ledger. I really do hope he gets the much anticipated posthumous Oscar.
