Resistance

February 28th 2007 01:00
People tend to think of themselves as a fairly smart species, and bacteria as a fairly dumb one. After all, people have nervous systems, language, culture and various other advantages that would seem to put us ahead- if we used them...

There's been concern in recent years over bacteria developing resistance to the various antibiotics we use to kill them. This isn't any natural evolutionary step; it's people acting to produce the more resistant bugs. Here's how it works: Doctor prescribes an antibiotic, which the patient takes. The first traces of the antibiotic immediately start killing off the most susceptible bugs- but the stronger, hardier bacteria are still hanging on. The patient has lost a large number of the weaker bacteria, and feeling better (not necessarily thinking better) stops taking the antibiotic.

As the levels of antibiotic in the patient's system diminish, the remaining bacteria revive and go about the bacteriological business: basically eating, excreting and making more bacteria. The problem is that these survivors are the stronger germs, and so their offspring are going to carry their superior genes and be more resistant themselves. This is how humans have been breeding superbugs for the last few decades.

In 2001, shortly after the 9/11 attack the United States invaded Afghanistan to destroy the terrorist group al-Qaeda and the Taliban government who was sheltering them. Unfortunately, President Bush then got distracted by something bright and shiny in Iraq. With attention turned to the country that didn't harbor our enemies, the fighting in Afghanistan was left to the back burner.

The Taliban and their al-Qaeda allies were not destroyed; and of course the cells that were left were the more cunning and stronger groups. Humans are not bacteria, of course: These war-hardened veterans can impart their knowledge and skills unto new recruits- ironically, the war in Iraq has turned out to be a recruiting bonanza for al-Qaeda.

There's a great joke in there about giving "aid and comfort to the enemy..."

Slay the Cheerleader; Save the World

Hooray for Our Side!! Our Side is the bestest side there is! We know Our Side is the bestest because we're here; we certainly would never be caught dead on the wrong side, now, would we?

Oh, it's not that the Other side is necessarily wrong- not all of them, just a few radical extremists. It's the radical extremists that make the Other side do such bad things. We sure are lucky that Our Side doesn't have any of those pesky radical extremists to make us do bad things. We should be thankful that our leaders had the foresight to pay such exorbitant fees for the Radical Extremist Hotels- yes, I know no one's ever actually seen them, but that's how we know they're working.

Yes, it's a shame about all the innocent victims collateral damage- but remember it's all the Other side's fault. If it weren't for the evil Others and those gosh-darn radical extremists we wouldn't have to fight so hard over there to save them from themselves. Oh, no, the war was never about weapons of mass deconstruction or the Others' leader's links to really really radical extremists groups. It was always just to get a bad man out of power. Isn't that a much better place over there now, after we gave them the benefit of Our Side's cleansing goodness?

It's such a comfort and relief to know that Our Side has always been completely in the right, and that we've never ever done anything wrong. Well, yeah, "mistakes" were made, some war crimes minor incidents happened, but that's all in the past. Laugh all you want about how our leaders' plan didn't work, but do it quickly because now those same leaders now have a new plan that will work.

What? How observant cynical can you possibly be to even suggest that the reason for the war was to shovel tons of cash into VicePrezCo to lose track of? That can't be the real reason for the war because Our Side is the good side. We're the bestest side, which logically can only mean that our motives are the bestest, too.

Just think it through: If Our Side wasn't the right side, the bestest, side... then we could maybe perhaps in some small, insignificant way... be wrong.

Honk! Honk!

Knife-murderers are iconic monsters to modern horror film fanatics, but a large part of their scare factor is that unlike Aliens and Predators and Vast Ancient All-Powerful Yet Completely Unknown Cult/Conspiracies, knife-murderers actually exist.

Carol Lynn Pappas was tried for stabbing her infant grand-child to death- possibly even after death; there were multiple stab wounds on the baby. As horrible as murder tends to be (In real life the suspects and victims alike tend not to be as pretty as on CSI) to be killed by a relative, a caregiver seems like one of the worst betrayals possible.

Granny Hack'n'Stab got off with "Not guilty by reason of insanity." Like our President, she isn't a bad person, she's merely the victim herself of bad advice: Part of her insanity defense was based on her getting spiritual advice from geese. Not from ducks (Who are at least qualified to offer insurance advice), not from Foghorn Leghorn or the wise old owl or even Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law... from geese.

So yes- one could make a case that if she gets spiritual advice from airborne Christmas dinners she may well be clinically cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs. My beef is this whole idea that people aren't guilty because yes, they did the deed, but they have so much damage to their wetware that they're a threat to themselves and others.

Okay, so send them to a hospital- even psychiatrists need a good laugh now and then. But for Justice's sake make the verdict "Guilty by reason of being too fucked up in the head to be allowed to roam free." When they're found not guilty and sent to a rehab resort it becomes too easy for people to sympathize with the killers.

The victim deserves better, even if they were killed by someone nuttier than Freddy Krueger on his best day.

Set Course for Fabulous!!

A few months ago when George Takei came out about being gay, several people who knew I was into Star Trek sent me links and articles about it... I guess I was lucky he didn't decide to shave his head. Unfortunately, too many people included variations on "What do you think?" along with the articles.

What was I supposed to think? With all the various Star Trek series it was inevitable that at least one regular would turn out to be gay, but unless it was Nichelle Nichols or Linda Park it wasn't going to have any real effect on my private fantasies. A guy being gay is like a guy having green eyes; I'd have to look closely to find out, and even then, why should I care

Big Brother Doesn't Want You Watching

February 22nd 2007 00:52
The FCC has finally regained their version of consciousness after the lot of them went into apoplectic shock after seeing Janet Jackson's nipple for four or five frames. Now they're back up and ready to tell Clowngress to mess with your television schedule.

The FCC still hasn't gotten their memo about VCRs, and they want all "violent" programming moved to 10:00 and after. So now we can look forward to even more vapid "reality" shows, cloyingly saccharine sitcoms... and another round of health warnings about how we need to get more sleep

The View From the Cheap Seats

"Politics" and "pornography" are close together in the dictionary for good reason. True, most pornos don't have the flashy production values that we associate with our so-called "leaders." Then again, what two women can do with a shemale, a radish and a jungle gym isn't remotely as obscene as most of what our elected leaders do to our country on a daily basis.

This is an attempt to stand out from most political blogs. Most blogs covering politics fall into one of two categories
