Parisian Pastries: Macaroons

November 5th 2011 02:51

macaroons
Yummy!

Oh Macaroons, the delicious treat that is often associated with France, was not actually invented in France. The macaroon was invented by Italian monks and was supposedly modeled after bellybuttons! At this time, macaroons were crispier, and did not have the creamy filling that they do in the image above. These today are called Italian macaroons. The macaroons in the picture are what we usually describe as French macaroons. These delicious treats were invented (or rather, refined) by the Frenchman Pierre Desfontaines Ladurée in the early 20th century. To make the macaroons, he sandwiched some ganache between two merignges. Today many flavors and colors can be found, but when the first French macaroons were created, the merigne was almond flavored, and the ganache was made of chocolate. Still sounds delish to moi!

Want to try the original macaroon?

(You are warned, this site is in French!)

Music: Yelle

Yelle: Que veux-tu (Madeon Remix)

Listen to the song here!

It would be easy to say that Yelle is one of my favorite French pop/dance musicians. Her sassy, up beat, girls rule the world style never gets old. It’s like Cyndi Lauper but in French with a techno beat. Does it get any better than that?! Her new album, Safari Disco Club, is absolutely amazing. It features awesome beats for every song, with less raunchy, more meaningful lyrics than her previous album. This is a remix for her song Que Veux-Tu by Madeon and it is one of the best remixes I’ve ever heard. If you are into techno, pop, French music, or any music, Yelle is worth checking out. If you like what you hear, you can buy her music on iTunes or SoundCloud!

La Sorbonne

November 4th 2011 01:04
Sorbonne, Paris, France
The main building of the Sorbonne University in Paris, France.

The Sorbonne is a university in Paris, France. It is one of the most beautiful universities in the world, in my opinion. You can study abroad here, but for a very large fee! Usually a semester long study abroad a la Sorbonne is around $10,000. If you go to a school like NYU or Duke, then this probably seems pretty reasonable to you, but if you go to any normal state-based school, like me, than this probably seems ludicrous to you. It also seems important to note that airfare, room and board, and excursions are not included in this price, so you will be spending even more money on all of those things. That will most likely add up to another few thousand. If you have that much money to play around with, than I would definitely recommend studying at La Sorbonne! It is a gorgeous school filled with history and surrounded by the wonderful Parisian ambiance.
