Father starves mischievous son to death

October 24th 2006 17:35
read about this incident a couple of days ago and just can’t seem to get it out of my head.

According to this article, a father starved his five-year-old son to death for being “mischievous”....(What the ???????)

Dhurau Ram Majhi, 34, a resident of a village in Raigarh district, locked up his son, Suraj, in a small stuffy room and made him go without food and water for four days.

This is sooo heart-breaking.

Preschoolers can be demanding, whiny and mischievous and I know I get mad at my kids often but this kid definitely didn’t deserve this punishment.

How can the father even think of doing this for so long? Even if he was angry with his kid, I’m sure he couldn’t stay angry for four days?

Where was the mother? I know that in rural India, wives generally don’t have much of a say but for a boy to be locked up for four days is a long long time.

What about neighbors?? There's got to be some other saner grown up in the vicinity !

I’m hoping this incident gets publicized enough and generates enough furore that the father will be punished immediately.

I am not a strong proponent of the death penalty but as a parent I want the father to be punished in the same manner he punished his son...I'm still getting chills just thinking about it

Please help get the word out so that the father gets his just punishment

Of course there is a correlation !

October 21st 2006 02:18
Is there a correlation between more junk food ads in children's television and childhood obesity?

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) plans to study links between the marketing campaigns for food targeted at children 12 and under and the rise of childhood obesity.

Duhh….??

Yes, of course, kids are going to eat more junk food if they see their favorite cartoon character munching down sugary cereal or candy.

More junk food, more TV time, less time for exercise = more obese kids.

Granted that junk food ads are not the sole reason for the growing obesity in this country, BUT Do we really need to spend a ton of money to study the link between junk food ads and increasing obesity in kids?

I’m sure the study will provide some useful statistical data but how much are numbers going to help? Do we want to wait for some study numbers to come out before we realize that there is a problem?

FCC Chairman Martin cited reports that the average child watches 2 to 4 hours of TV per day and views about 40,000 TV ads every year, most of them for cereal, candy, toys and fast food.

Kids cannot tell the difference between what is real and what’s pure marketing drivel- To my kids, Sponge Bob is as real as Santa Claus.

They don’t care if Sponge Bob or Scooby Doo are peddling food with close to zero nutritional value. If it’s good enough for Sponge Bob, it’s good for them

American companies spend about $15 billion a year marketing and advertising to children under age 12.

I know that most TV channels don’t want to loose the ad revenue but how about Sponge Bob talks about broccoli or celery for atleast a quarter of the time that he shills for sugary cereal.

A Tune Up for your brain

October 18th 2006 19:40
Parents who spend time and money to teach their children music, take heart — a new study shows young children who take music lessons have better memories than their nonmusical peers.

“This is the first study to show that brain responses in young, musically trained and untrained children change differently over the course of a year,” said Trainor who led the study.

She said it was not that surprising that children studying music improved in musical listening skills more than children not studying music.

“On the other hand, it is very interesting that the children taking music lessons improved more over the year on general memory skills that are correlated with nonmusicalabilities such as literacy, verbal memory, visiospatial processing, mathematics and IQ,” she said.

Past studies have shown that older kids who take music lessons generally have higher IQ . Most children begin music lessons when they start school - This study is important because it focuses on much younger children aged 4-6.

Guess I better get started on piano lessons for my kids !

Dora says

October 10th 2006 11:51
Television is full of ads where network cartoon characters are shilling for sugary cereal or similar junk food.

Today I went grocery shopping and was pleasantly surprised to see Dora (not exactly SpongeBob - but close enough) on top of the produce section
