The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 comes into effect this Thursday in India.

According to estimates, about 70% of women in India are victims of domestic abuse in some form. Kids who grow up being abused or seeing their mother abused will in turn continue that into their adulthood and the vicious cycle continues...

Under this law, domestic violence offenders can be jailed for a maximum of one year or fined up to Rs 20,000, or both.

The new law provides an all-encompassing definition of domestic violence including not only physical violence by the husband, such as beating or physically hurting his wife, or sexual violence like forced intercourse, but also verbal or emotional violence such as insulting the wife or preventing her from taking up a job, and even economic violence such as not allowing the wife to use her salary.

The law addresses sexual abuse of children, or forcing girls to marry against their wishes as well.

While I commend the government’s intentions with both this law and the law to prevent child labor, I wonder about how the government is going to make it work?. Does the government have the necessary power and will to implement and maintain these laws ? Or is this just lip-service to be made effective and then forgotten or wilfully disobeyed like most other laws in India?

Only time will tell……

Hello World

October 10th 2006 02:40
Yea....I know most of you most be thinking - "Oh No -not another mommy blog" . Well, this blog is different. I know all bloggers say that but I MEAN it

You won't be bored about the details of my kids potty schedule or what their latest funny/most irritating antic is.

What I will be writing about is parenting related news, issues, and information that will hopefully help you feel comfortable making decisions for your
children without second guessing yourself.

Parenting is a tough enough job....and an ever present danger to sanity. I don't think even a degree in rocket science or brain surgery will prepare you for
the wonders and trials and tribulations of parenthood.

In today's society we are soooo bombarded with information that even the most enlightened educated parent is always wondering if she is doing the right
thing.

Spinach is good UNLESS it is tainted then it can be life threatening.

Fruit juice is good....oh no - It is contributing to the national obesity.

Kids need to be exposed to all activities early on but wait a minute. ...overscheduling is bad.

I also hope to write about cultural similarities between different religions and cultures. I grew up in a Hindu family, studied in a Catholic school and had
Muslim, Jewish friends we grew up together without our religious differences coming in the way of our youthful lives together.
I believe in "Respect all religions, worship your own". I think in today's world
religious tolerance is becoming more and more of an endangered species and we need to teach our children these values so we can save the humaneness of us all

So, HELLO WORLD - here I am !
