2008 All-Australian team

September 16th 2008 02:32
2008 All-Australian team:
B: Dale Morris (W Bulldogs), Matthew Scarlett (Geelong), Tom Harley (Geelong - vice-captain)
HB: Luke Hodge (Hawthorn), Nathan Bock (Adelaide), Sam Fisher (St Kilda)
C: Jimmy Bartel (Geelong), Joel Corey (Geelong), Adam Cooney (W Bulldogs)
HF: Steve Johnson (Geelong), Nick Riewoldt (St Kilda), Brent Harvey (North Melb)
F: Brendan Fevola (Carlton), Lance Franklin (Hawthorn), Paul Medhurst (Collingwood)
Rucks: Dean Cox (West Coast), Chris Judd (Carlton - captain), Gary Ablett (Geelong).
Interchange: Corey Enright (Geelong), Matthew Pavlich (Fremantle), Matthew Richardson (Richmond), Aaron Sandilands (Fremantle)

The All Australian selection panel is: Andrew Demetriou (chairman), Adrian Anderson, Rod Austin, Kevin Bartlett, Mark Bickley, Gerard Healy, Glen Jakovich, Robert Walls.

There we have it, the 2008 All-Australian team. To the selectors’ credit they have done a pretty good job. Obviously it isn’t an easy task. However, it wouldn’t be an All-Australian team without a few contentious selections. Here are the picks I raised an eyebrow to:

Paul Medhurst – The only Collingwood player! It’s hard to believe. Medhurst was outstanding during the first two thirds of the season, but then dropped off. To his credit, Medhurst did kick around 50 goals, took plenty of marks and became the team player he wasn’t in the past. On those credentials I accept his selection.

Chris Judd – Before you scream out in protest, it isn’t Judd’s selection as a player but as the team’s skipper. Yes, Judd had a really good individual season and helped lead Carlton up the ladder, but I was surprised when he was named captain. Maybe it was because there was no better candidate. Geelong captain Tom Harley may have been the best choice, but he wasn’t even a walk-up start for the team.

Corey Enright, Matthew Pavlich & Aaron Sandilands – All three bench players had productive seasons and it was more the players they kept out of the side that made them slightly controversial picks. Enright kept out a bevy of midfielders, most notably Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell. Pavlich was up against Brisbane’s Jon Brown and got the nod, while Sandilands edged out Essendon’s David Hille and North Melbourne’s Drew Petrie.

Symonds to miss Inidan tour

September 12th 2008 06:21
As a fan of Andrew Symonds, his omission from the Australian squad to tour India is a shame. In saying that, the selectors have made the correct choice for what will be the toughest challenge the Aussies have confronted in years.

Unfortunately, now from an entertainment perspective Australian fans have lost arguably the best player to watch in the team. His all-round capabilities will also be sorely missed on the field. Hopefully, for the sake of Australian cricket Symonds is able to force his way back as his country has lost too many of its shining lights in the past couple of seasons.

AFL Finals - Week 2

September 12th 2008 00:39
Well, time to get cracking on my blog again and there's no better way to than with a preview of the second week of the AFL Finals.

Ofcourse, last week's action was a bit below the usual expectations of a Finals series. The only match that really lived up to the usual standards being Collingwood’s surprise victory against the Crows in Adelaide. Other wins being Hawthorn over the Western Bulldogs and Geelong against St Kilda in comprehensive Qualifying Final victories, while Sydney knocked out the Kangaroos in front of a small crowd at ANZ Stadium.

This week we have two elimination semi finals. Tonight, the Western Bulldogs meet Sydney at the MCG, before tomorrow night Collingwood face St Kilda at the same venue. Here are my thoughts:

Friday night: Western Bulldogs v Sydney Swans @ MCG
Sydney has struggled against the top teams this season, but I have a feeling it will change tonight. After witnessing first hand the Bulldogs’ dismantling against the Hawks last week Sydney shape as a side again able to suffocate the boys from Melbourne’s western suburbs. Expect Finals experience to again play a major part in this clash as Synedy’s seasoned players demonstrated against the Roos last week. Players like Adam Goodes, Brett Kirk and Barry Hall will be tough to stop.

Saturday night: St Kilda v Collingwood
There will be nothing short of a massive crowd at the ‘G tomorrow night. A lot of pundits have written St Kilda off during the week, but I feel those calls have been somewhat premature. A lot of sides have been in reasonable form and then come up against Geelong (as the Saints did last week) and been blown away. Despite the injury concerns of Luke Ball, St Kilda still has the experience to outplay the up-and-down Magpies. Still, it should be very competitive and no doubt close encounter.

After the disappintment of two away losses, the Boston Celtics have moved to a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven first round series with the Atlanta Hawks.

The NBA's best team during the regular season were 110-85 victors over the Hawks in Boston
