Palininians
November 7th 2009 18:47
The Palininians claimed great victories this week; no, this wasn’t Hamas and the Palestinians launching rockets trying to drive Israel from their olive groves but equally fanatical mobs who are mesmerized by those big red lips (not of the Rolling Stones) of Sarah Palin trying to drive Republicans from the Republican Party.
Republicans candidates won the elections for governor in New Jersey and Virginia this week, and the Palininians are crowing. They claim that these victories are a slap in the face for President Obama and his policies of spend and tax, and his “dithering” on Afghanistan. They claim the voters of these states have embraced the Conservative message of no new taxes, rejection of an expensive health care plan in the middle of a recession, and are demanding that he send troops to Afghanistan give General McChrystal the support he needs to stabilize the situation there. And, they are claiming that they and their standard bearer delivered the message that brought these victories.
Meanwhile, back in Virginia, Governor elect Robert F. McDonnell told a news conference that he would focus on repairing the state’s budget, lowering taxes to spur investment, and focus on job creation. There was no mention of Afghanistan or health care, or other Conservative hot button issues such as abortion, gun rights, and gay marriage. Instead, he plans to immediately focus on passing legislation to enable off shore drilling (he doesn’t care about supplying more oil for the country but more oil revenues for Virginia), charter schools, privatize state liquor stores, open the state’s rest stops, and conduct an audit of the Department of Transportation. Virginia was a blue state during the last presidential election because the Democrats carried the independent and black vote. This time, by disassociating themselves from the Conservatives and focusing on state needs, Republicans were able to carry independents, and blacks did not vote in great numbers.
In New Jersey, Republican Chris Christie, a former prosecutor known for his success in public corruption cases, defeated Democratic Governor Jon Corzine. Corzine out spent Christie by more than $12 million, but it was Corzine’s inability to come up with ideas to solve New Jersey’s financial problems and unemployment (unemployment is about 10% and property taxes average over $7,000 per household, the highest in the country) that enabled Christie to defeat him. The recent arrests for organ trafficking in Newark underscored the corruption in New Jersey, and drove the voters to a strong law and order candidate. Exit polls showed that voters were most concerned about soaring property taxes and crime, and they wanted someone to do something about it. Democrats and independents supported Conservative Christie over Corzine, who they perceived as weak and ineffective in resolving the issues most important to them. Joe “You lie” Wilson campaigned for Christie, but Christie kept a safe distance from Wilson lest he catch Conservative Ebola and alienate the independents and Democrats who switched to support him.
It seems neither governor elect is calling his victory a Conservative tilt; they left out the Conservative hot buttons and campaigned on issues that were important to independents and moderates from both parties.
Over in New York, in the race that really did matter because it could be a portend of things to come, the Palininians threw their support behind Doug Hoffman, the Conservative candidate for the 23rd Congressional District seat in New York. He was running against Dede Scozzafava, a moderate Republican, who came out in favor of abortion and gay rights; the Republican Party spent more than $750,000 supporting her candidacy. Just before the election, Dede conceded that she did not have enough support to continue, and she withdrew and threw her support behind the Democratic challenger, Bill Owens; the Republican candidate supported the Democrat against the Conservative! When the night of November 3 came around, Doug found himself conceding to Bill Owens, losing a House seat that Republicans have held for more than one hundred years. Yet, Palininians crowed and cheered. Why? Because they had defeated Dede Scozzafava, a Republican! Never mind that the Democrats just added to their majority in the House, and they did it in traditionally Republican/Conservative upstate New York.
The Palininians are running around the country now, showing up in Iowa to lobby the caucuses on behalf of their red lipped candidate, to show how they thumbed their collective nose at the Democratic Party by committing fratricide in New York; they are willing to help Conservatives do the same thing in Iowa and anywhere else in the country (they are getting ready to attack Charlie Crist, the Republican Governor of Florida because he is too moderate; Crist is thinking about a Senate run).
Help me out here: for the sake of argument, there are about 310 million citizens in this country, give or take 5 million. About one third are Democrat, Liberal, radical, pinko, communists, about one third are Republican, Conservative, reactionary, hobnail booted, skinhead, Ku Klux Klan, Nazis, and about one third are good looking moderates like me. About 51% of the electorate is female, and about 60% of the population is eligible to vote. So, by my calculation, about 31 million women fit the John McCain running mate mold. Can anyone tell me why, out of 31 million women, he couldn’t find an American born, 35 year old black woman who spoke Spanish, had large, bright red lips, was a born again Christian who grew up in a Muslim country, was an Ivy League college graduate with a law degree, who got her news from something besides Woman’s Day, and the only foreign countries she could see from her kitchen window were the evil empires of either Mexico or Canada?
