Oz Politics and Kulture! - by Suburban Boy

As I have previously written a few blogs on the issue of the Queensland Director of Public Prosecutions and her handling of the " Palm Island Aboriginal death in Custody Case" and I have not been around to update what was happening I thought i would relay my take on events that have taken place since my last blog.

Following rallies held around Australia and Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie's visit to Palm Island , where he publicly announced that he would support the DPP if she was to have an independent review of the matter, much political to and fro-ing has taken place.

Firstly the Queensland DPP, Leanne Clare rebuked Premier Beattie”s public statement by saying that regardless of any review no one in her office would touch the case as they had already determined that the case could not succeed.

Then a day or two latter the Attorney-General, Kerry Shine announced that the DPP had delivered to him all her papers on the matter and this had enabled him to be in the position to conduct an independent review of the matter.

Mr Shine stressed he had not sought these papers from the DPP and in fact the papers had turned up without him expecting them.

Once again however the DPP released a statement saying she had given the documents to the attorney at his request.

The Attorney then announced he would establish a review of the DPP's finding and latter appointed former judge Pat Shanahan to head the review.

The government was then embarrassed by the revelation that the former judge had been on the panel that selected the DPP for her job. With a very obvious conflict of interest exposed Mr Shanahan resigned from the review.

His place was taken by inquiry veteran respected former NSW chief justice Sir Laurence Street who was appointed this week.

The government has not come out of this looking very competent or in control at all. The DPP is taking swipes at public comments being made by the Government and they seem unable to approach this issue without being forced into back downs all along the way. They firstly say they cannot interfere and then seem to do exactly that and then they seem unable to show any signs of good management when it came to appointing someone for the review.

Justice Street does however seem to be a good choice to head the review. He is not from Queensland and comes to the review with much experience in both legal and political inquiries.

There is an old saying though in politics and that is never call an inquiry if you don't know what the outcomes will be. Although many would argue it will be hard for Justice Street not to come out in supporting the DPP's but the question must be where does the Government go from there?
The fact will still remain that the Indigenous community has lost any faith they had in the Justice system and they have never had any confidence in the Police force. These are the areas the government must address.

Power attracts Talent

November 27th 2006 12:21
The re-election of the Bracks Labor Government on Saturday night has highlighted a problem for both major political parties. For the Liberals it has shown the absolute lack of talent and leadership of their State parliamentary and organisational members and for Labor it has reinforced the power of incumbency.

Why is this so? I believe it has shown a fundamental problem for both parties and that is people attracted to politics want to be where the power is. Sitting on the benches of a party in opposition is not that place.

Any Liberal would-be candidate doesn’t want to be stuck wandering around in the opposition side of the chamber unable to affect any change and unable to get anyone to listen to any ideas or opinions they may have. The talented ones want to be out being heard and implementing legislation.

Where can they do that? Federal politics of course. Did Malcom Turnball or Andrew Robb chose to run for state seats in their respective states? No! They went where the action was and that was federal politics leaving their state parties to select from a group of policy bereft and seat warming party hacks and wannabees to fill the seats of opposition.

Former Victorian liberal opposition leader Robert Doyle was quoted on the weekend as saying that some Liberal Shadow Ministers had spent only 10 hours in their four years in opposition in developing policy. is it any wonder they continue to get passed over election after election yet people are still prepared to vote Liberal when it comes to federal politics.

The same can be said for Labor. What does a talented and ambitious Labor candidate want? Do they opt for years of cold Canberra winters languishing on the opposition side of the chamber obsessed with petty factional carve ups of the few measly positions available or do they head to state politics with its smell of ministerial leather and the ability to put ones mark on areas of actual policy in progress.

Often names are put of labor state heavies (two that come to mind have been Carr and Beattie) being touted as being star recruits to Federal politics but the answer is always why would they bother. Victoria is a good example of this with star millionaire internet recruit Evan Thornley opting to go for an upper house seat in the Victorian parliament rather then running for a federal seat.

This is not just a parliamentarian belief but even the back room advisers and machine politics lackeys want to be wandering around in the corridors of power and not slinking around the dark and lonely back blocks of opposition.

For the Liberals it seems it will take a defeat federally to send much of its talent scurrying off to their respective state parliaments and organisations. For Labor it will probably take a Federal Labor Leader who will inspire its talent to believe that a change of Government is a real possibility and with Big Kim hanging round it certainly is not going to happen anytime soon.

"Bomber" Beazley Cannot Win!!!

November 22nd 2006 14:13
Put simply Labor cannot win the next federal election with Kym Beazley as their leader. This one simple fact should be quite obvious to the power brokers and machine men of the Labor Party. However it seems the disastrous flirtation with a relatively young and inexperienced leader in that of Mark Latham has left no one within the party (other then a retiring M.P. in the form of Harry Quik) with any intestinal fortitude to give Kym the tap on the shoulder.
Poll after poll shows that the electorate at large believes that Beazely just does not have what it takes to be considered an alternative Prime Minister.

I recently attend a social gathering with people who were ALP supporters and workers as well as people working within the union movement. Now you would consider that someone amongst them would have that kind of blind loyalty that a football fans has about the team they have supported all their life. However not one person there felt that despite rising interest rates, an unpopular war in Iraq and some of the most regressive labour laws we have ever seen "Bomber" Beazley could win.

This comes on top of my own day to day observations and interactions with people who tell me how they despise Howard but see Beazley as no alternative at all. A recent street poll conducted in the Courier -Mail found only 20% of people thought labor could win the election under Beazley. Now I know that street polls are no scientific poll but you would think given that Labor polls a pretty consistent 40% first vote support that you could expect that maybe you would get 35% at least who would say that he could win.

Beazley has been running the line lately that he is the most experienced person in the party and as such he should be leader. His experience unfortunately and he seems to forget this (though given his recent slip ups and forget fullness this may be understandable) is at losing elections.

The Labor party will stand condemned at the next election if they go into it with Beazley and lose. Through its sheer arrogance and down right cowardice it will have let down working people, the environment and those of us who believe in peace rather then war as a solution.

Lawyers agree with Muslim Cleric

October 27th 2006 11:01
Now before I start i want to make one thing clear. I do not support or condone any of what has been said by Muslim Cleric Sheik Taj el-Din al-Hilaly.

I wish to point however to some of those contradictions of life that seem to play out on the political and broader community stage

Beazley and Bush agree on Iraq

October 25th 2006 01:21
Excuse me if I am getting confused but according to John Howard wants to cut and run from Iraq. Now according to the Bush Administration it will be about 12-18 months before Iraq can be in a position to have its forces take control of the country. Now given that a federal election is 12 months off dosen't this mean Beazley will be withdrawing troops at about the same time as the U.S..
Or does Howard believe this will take a lot longer to occur in Iraq? Unlike his original timetable after the overthrown of Saddam that troops would be there for about 12 months.
Does this mean the Bush administration is saying in 12 months just to appease the folks at home before mid-term congressional elections

Now that the dust has all but settled on the recent Queensland election it maybe worth making some observations.

An oppostition they cannot achieve unity amongst its own will not beat even the most incompetent Government

What a weird week it has been. The great xenophobia auction is on in earnest.

Beazely kicks it off with the idea of having all visitors to Australia be they tourists or immigrants signing a pledege to respect Australian Values and some how linking it to the "War on Terrorism

Kym and John Good Bed Buddies

September 15th 2006 02:06
It is very interesting to see just what it takes to get our Federal Leaders to come together in agreement on something.

One might think that with Australia facing several major areas of concern such as climate change, health crisis (in almost all states), down turn in export manufacturing and water problems that a spirit of co-operation may prevail

What is Beazely on????

September 12th 2006 12:03
Just after discovering this blogg site and deciding I would put my writing skills and ideas to practice. I figured I would right something of the major political topic in my part of the world currently, that being the Queensland Election.

Until I heard the latest utterances of Bomber Beazely. Just what was he thinking. What was he on? Had he been reading the Latham Diaries and had some weird flashback thing occur where he thought he was Mark Latham
