Organic: Not just a Buzzword

Ever wonder why those apples at the end of the aisle cost twice as much? Is it simply because the distributor slapped an "organic" label on the side? Or are you the one who doubts whether organic foods and products are really better?
Since 1942, the Organic food movement has steadily gained following. Mostly amongst rural farmers and communities. There are a number of articles detailing the benefits of organic foods over commercially grown kinds. Many of these deal with the amount and types of pesticides used to keep crops safe. These pesticides have been linked to weight gain, increased risk of disease, lower sperm count, and other maladies. Now, I'm not saying that because you've eaten commercially grown beef and protected corn all your life you're going to get cancer, but there is an increased risk.
Is it worth it? This is the number one question that consumers ask when they see an "organic" label. Think about it. Your cutting a health risk by not having any (or as much) pesticide on your food. Naturally grown crops tend to be better for the environment by enriching soil and promoting helpful bacteria growth. And don't forget all the benefits of supporting a local economy. Many organic foods can't survive a cross-country trip without preservatives, so you'll find that organic foods may be growing in your own back yard! By supporting local economies you've also reduced the waste produced by trucking, packing, and manufacturing commercially grown foods. Makes you feel good doesn't it?
The next time you walk down aisle 8 or peruse the produce section, take a second look at that Organic label and perhaps give it a shot. You might like it.
