Orble Voting

December 11th 2006 00:10
We have changed the voting system to the following:

A Post will start with a number of votes equal to the Karma of the person who wrote it.

The first comment that each person makes on a post will add to the score a number of votes equal to their karma. Subsequent comments by the same person will not add anything to the vote score.

If you have commented on a post it is therefore the same thing as clicking the vote button. You have to be logged in for your vote to count for more than 1.

I have been thinking about making these changes for months and no particular recent incident or suggestion caused me to act. The change is certainly not an indictment of anyone! Lots of comments are a very good thing.

No system is perfect but I think on the whole this system is better than what we had. The previous system had a fundamental flaw in that it was open to gaming, not that I'm suggesting anyone was doing so

Some very interesting and more complicated systems were suggested by people however for the moment I want to see how this one goes. Simplicity is usually better where possible.

Thanks,
Jon.

Jon,

I think it's a great idea. Simple is always best.

Actually, Jon, here's one more change I think it would be good to make: it's currently possible to BOTH vote and comment -- so I've just experimented, and was able to add 20 to someone's post. Could you modify this so that the max I can add is 10?

And, here's one more note (sorry for the extra e-mails everyone) -- I added an additional comment to this post, and was able to add an additional 2 points to the vote tally. So I dunno if the system is entirely in place yet...

Good point Adrian -- I guess Jay has not actually hit the go button yet. It should be done by later tonight.

Very interesting on the logics. So everyone has equal chances to get their posts viewed without having those particular few posts at the top ten all the time.

Now it is more upon how many visitors there that supports and votes for each post published in Orble BLOG. Very interesting indeed.

Will look forward on the outcome soon.

Hi everyone!

The new voting system should be working now - I hope find it more fair and if you find any problems please direct them to Jon.

Thanks

Good tweaking guys!

Hey guys, have just tested this, and what I get is:

-- initial comment adds karma
-- successive comments don't add anything.

So that's good.

Problems (I'd claim) are:

1. If I comment and then vote, I can add a total of 11 points (so the vote adds something, but defaults to 1).

2. If I vote and then comment, I can add a total of 20 points (both vote and comment add karma).

3. You can't vote on your own post, but you can add to the vote count by commenting (first coment adds karma; successive comments add nothing).

Hi Adrian

Thanks for testing this - I'll make some changes today which should fix it so that:

- when you create a post it is created with a score of your karma
- you cannot vote on your own post
- commenting on your own post will not alter the score

- when you vote on someone else's post this will increase the score of that post by karma, unless you have already commented
- when you comment on someone else's post this will increase the score of that post by karma, unless you have already voted

So in effect you can vote ONLY ONCE on a post and a vote is created:

- if/when you create the post
- when you vote on the post
- when you comment on the post

I think this is the functionality we are looking for?? Let me know ASAP if anyone thinks this is unfair and I will discuss with Jon.

Thanks
Jay

Didn't work for my first comment on Memorable Christmas Parties.

Please fix. kthxbai.

You created the post so that's your vote done - commenting on your own posts won't add additional votes to the total...

Jon and Jay,

I don't know if I agree with the added change :

- when you vote on someone else's post this will increase the score of that post by karma, unless you have already commented
- when you comment on someone else's post this will increase the score of that post by karma, unless you have already voted

...that means that no matter what you do you can only leave your karma x 1.

I think you should be able to leave it once with a vote and double it with a comment before you're done!

ON ANOTHER NOTE:

I WANT TO RAVE ABOUT the new PROFILE PAGE Profiles and recent comment lists … are you going to do a notice so I can rave about it there… or should I rave on here I wonder…?

Jon,

Good rave!!!

RAVE... RAVE... RAVE... RAVE... RAVE... LURV IT!!!

I think it does two things;

1) makes the author feel more responsible for what they are saying - esp. when read end on end after each other... and,

2) allows other readers to sketch a character analysis, which can help target future posts to better suit, and

3) allows readers to quickly identify with the person and their style when looking for new sites to read...

Because I have three bloggs and must remember the thread of each, it helps me pick up the threads easily... so I guess it benefits those with multiple bloggs...and that helps by having the posts listed in order of their being posted across multiple sites also...

When following other bloggs and commenting, sometimes it is easy to get lost, I find that seeing my own comment can trigger my memory to remembering where I wanted to visit next - before I was last interrupted by life*lol*

I am just an instant fan of it really... probably because of my notorious short memory and sparodic interuptedness in writing and responding...

...well thought out I say, a helpful tool...

thanks...
Lilla...

One suggestion Jon in the Orble Categories... thereis no Environmental.

You have politics, Lifestyle and Science, but sometimes I feel my posts fall between the cracks of all three...(?)

thanks...

I know I'm a bit tardy in this thread, so if it slips through the cracks, that's okay. Lilla was talking about comments we've posted appearing on our profile page. I think that's fantastic and a great idea, but I believe it could be improved with a link to where that comment was made.

I check others' profile pages all the time and while I can see their comments, they don't always make sense out of context, or they say something that makes me interested in the conversation, but I have no way of knowing where it was posted.

I'm also trying to figure out what the method to the madness is with the vote colors. Some are red, some are green, some are yellow, but I can't find any sort of text explaining what the colors mean. Some of these have the same score... one with a vote of 10, another with a vote of 10, but the vote boxes appear as different colors.

while I'm at it, I'm also looking for an FAQ or TOS page, but can't seem to locate either. Do they exist? If so, where do I find them?

Thanks,

W

I agree with Wendi Jon,

Sometimes I get so interested in what the conversation must have been about, but have no way of finding my way there from the profile comment page...

Great point Wendi,

Hey guys, I think Jon/Jay have already added the "link to original post" idea to the list of things of changes to make. In fact, I think it was Lilla who first suggested this a while back.

Hi guys

We have added the 'link to original post' idea to the list, but there are a few more important things to add before I get around to that

The colours for the vote boxes are determined by the Orble category/channel that the Post will appear in.
