Orble Search

November 21st 2006 07:25
I've put up a fairly basic Orble search. I'll be improving it over the next couple of days to include better results and local (a single blog) search as well as having new posts indexed automatically.

It's actually already quite useful. If you type in "Borat" for instance, you can find all of the 18 different posts which people have made on the movie.

Jon.

Good to see. Will this be making its way onto blogrolls anytime soon?

Also, I tried it out quickly, and have a questions. I searched for "Brandon Flowers" and it came up with a Musictimes article, but it was third in a list of five. The first two ranked higher in terms of vote count, but were about Brandon Routh. I was wondering - would it be better if the results were listed in order of accuracy and then vote count?

I've just been tinkering with this. I want it to use both but at the moment puts too much empahsis on vote count.

I'll get onto Blogrolls by the end of the week -- promise.

Thanks Jon, you're doing great work.

The search should work much better now for multiple keywords. It still does not include the text of a post -- just the title, short title, and keywords, although I think for the moment that should be ok.

Fare enough Jon.

I was wondering if you could add "snap preview anywhere" on the sidebar. Since that will allow us to see the preview in small box before visiting. well not that important.

Thanks for your hard work for us Jon.

Hi Kams,

I'm not sure exactly what you mean -- a little more detail? Do you mean having a pop-up preview box for the popular posts in the side-bar?

Jon.

This is a great feature! Thanks Jon.

I think the best idea to implement eventually is to add a search function in the sidebar, and allow all the different panes - Popular posts, Blogs etc - to be collapseable? Probably a little hard to implement, but it might be worth it.

You must have read my mind Jon because only a few days before this I was thinking how frustrating it was to read all these blogs by other writers while having to remember the domain names to return to them. The Orble search is fantastic, eventually there won't be anything to improve on!

The recent changes on Orble have been nothing short of fantastic. Well done Orble team!

Jon i was talking about "Snap preview anywhere" offered by search engine "snap". That allow viewer to see the content preview in small rectangle when they hover their mouse on a link.

That is free and easy to implement, just few line of codes.

but as you already introduced a search system, i think we can forget about that. Just need to work on how we can have search by keywords, title, author and date (not to mention the subject).

I know thats a lot of things, especially the problem would be pulling out infos out of everyones archives and sort them. I got an idea don't know if you will like it, why not we implement Google custom search?

Is there any way to search by tag?

By the way... good job on the site SE!

Tags will be very easy to add now the search engine is done. I'll add this in soon.

Kams -- The Snap preview is a nice feature, I'll have a look.

Searching by author and date is a nice idea. Should not be too hard (I think).

Google custom search is a great service but I think we can create a system that work better for Orble if we write it ourselves. For instance currently blogs are listed at the top of the search results in a special box (try searching for "film") which I don't think we could do with a Google custom search.

I suggested Google custom just as a temporary solution, nothing for long run.

Yes Snap is cool feature. but i like your--

Tag would be redundancy when usually we can search by keywords that already available within the post.

We don't need nothing complex, just the search engine we have added with some broader search. after all we are a blog network not search engine right?

"Tag would be redundancy when usually we can search by keywords that already available within the post."

Not if you understand its purpose. A tag cloud is completely different from search. It serves several purposes.

A) It tells me as a blogger what the most popular tags are at the moment. This helps me jump onto the bandwagon of the busiest tags and be a part of the "push", if you will.

B) It helps me jump right to the tags I'm interested in. If I search, I'm going to get posts that mention those keywords, but if I click on one of the popular tags I'm only going to get results that used that tag. It kind of helps you weed out the clutter and jump straight to your topic.

C) Tag clouds give you the latest post first, unlike regular search. For me, this is an excellent way to find the latest posts on iPods, for example.

I use Technorati religiously, and the tag cloud is something I use daily.

It does make sense. In my opinion anyway.

Yes i can see your point Eric. But in Orble case, we have around a thousand blog. Imagine the Cloud.

In technorati that somewhat different, since they don't actually create the cloud, they aggregate from all the blogs who use technorati tags. I use that too.

And also Tag will limit the view for popular tagged blogs only. As you said we go for popular tag, that means those blog who don't have popular tag will have less views. That is not good for a community.

In technorati they do not have to worry about all sites, but in orble since its a network we need to give everyone equal chance of visibility.

"But in Orble case, we have around a thousand blog. Imagine the Cloud."

That is why you only display the top 15 or so tags.

"In technorati that somewhat different, since they don't actually create the cloud, they aggregate from all the blogs who use technorati tags. I use that too."

That is exactly what I'm talking about. It would help me tremendously.

Good point, but I'm not sure I see what other purpose a tag cloud could serve. It's there as a short cut for the hottest tags and it sits off to the side. It reflects the whole "Online Democracy" feel if you know what I mean. If you're blogging tags that no one cares about, why should anyone be reading it anyway? I'm not trying to be rude here, but it's a reality.

I think if the voting ALGO were done right, the new search finalized, and a top tag cloud added the homepage would be WAY easier to navigate.

Personally, I want to harness and blog what is popular. Right now it's kind of hard to tell what that is.

I love tag clouds because they get you right to the point, but if I'm alone then scratch the idea. No biggie.

There's my two...

Yes i got the point. A site wide tag cloud.

If you're blogging tags that no one cares about, why should anyone be reading it anyway? I'm not trying to be rude here, but it's a reality.

Some people aren't good in tagging, but that necessarily means they don't have anything useful to offer. Democracy sometimes suppress the voice of minor, so its not always a good practice. In my opinion a good blogger may r may not be a expert in Tagging (i have seen blogger who left that even blank ).

So in my thought we can do something like this we have a tag cloud as well as we have popular 5 posts(which expires everyday) from every categories and 5 recent posts from every categories on the home page. This will be fair for all for majority and minority

Well we need Jon's point of view in here, after all he is the boss. not we.

For some reason that never crossed my mind. It's a valid concern and in a community like Orble it's quite possible that tagging errors could cost people earned visits.

Well, Jon seems to have a grasp on things so we'll just have to see what he says. Thanks for the open discussion on this. I love the debate of ideas!
