Orble Pays Bloggers $40 per week...

November 21st 2006 14:49
Orble
Get Paid to Blog
...once you "write consistently over a 2 week period and your posts attract some comments and votes," that is.

Any body else out there making money with Orble?

Somehow thru my "paid blogging" or "pay for blogging" or "blogging for pay" or "pay per post" or "pay per contribution" searching I found Orble, a site that pays folks to blog.

I sent off an application for this blog and got back this lovely email:

Hello Paula,
Thank you for your application to write an Orble Domain blog.We liked your example posts however for the moment we would ask that you start with a regular Orble blog.

A regular Orble blog is hosted on Orble.com (www.orble.com/janes-movie-blog/). An Orble Domain blog is hosted on it's own domain name (http://www.janesmovieblog.com/) and the writer is paid a commission on any revenue generated.

Regular Orble blogs have all the functionality of Domain blogs and allow the writer to fully participate in the Orble community. It costs Orble anything from $30 to $60 to set up a new Domain blog so you can understand that we like to see if a writer is able to blog consistently before committing to this expense.

If you are able to write consistently over a 2 week period and your posts attract some comments and votes we would then be happy to place your blog on a separate domain name and pay you a commission on any revenue your blog generates. At that time you would also be automatically considered for the weekly blogging "scholarship" which offers $40 pw for the first 8 weeks as your new blog is establishing itself.

You can sign up for a regular Orble blog at my.orble.com. If you have any problems setting up your new blog or have any other questions please let me know.

Regards, Jasmine.

I fretted over figuring out where to put my some stats coding, but the folks at Orble took care of that when they sent me back this nice traffic stats email last night (obviously I need to read and follow up on their search optimizing tips):

Heh, well I can say for sure that the orble money I make is at least paying off my bank fees... sort of...

Though it does make me some serious money, or atleast presenting the chances to make said money. You have no idea how sexy 'paid to write' looks on some uni kids resumé...

I have,

I actually found out about Orble looking for paid work on seek.com, that was where the scholarship was being offered.

I'm guessing because I haven't heard anything back that the scholarship isn't going to me, which is fine.

And whilst I've gotten my first two commission amounts in the last two weeks I'm not majorly fussed by how much they are, I've actually found blogging to be a nice outlet from my work at the moment and so am happy in doing it for that intrinsic reason.

It's definitely a good way of refining writing skills.

So hang in there Paula, you'll definitely be having more viewers are comments now.

Hey Paula,

Great catchy title and nice post. I found out about Orble from a post by someone at Blogfeast.net. As an author, albeit self-published, I thought it would be akin to waving a magic wand and I'd have my blog and that $40 scholarship.

Needless to say ... this experience has been a bit humbling, but I daresay necessary.

Just because I build it, it doesn't necessarily mean that "they" will come...

Here's to a great holiday!

Peace,
Dee

Orble attracts writers on various contracts, as per what is suitable for the time. Thus, some are paid the guaranteed amount of $40 or 50% of revenue, whichever is higher. For the most part though, most of the writers are paid on a revenue-only scheme - Orble is still a startup company and they can't afford to pay all 1000 or so writers at $40 a week.

Like Stuart, I found out about Orble through Seek.com, and was attracted by the prospect of a guaranteed $40 per week. I did not receive the 'scholarship' as some are calling it, but I do have a domain blog and have accumulated a small amount of commission (incidentally, does anyone know when that amount is paid to us?)

For me though, it is more about the love of writing. It is enjoyable and I believe it has helped me improve.

To Paula,

I was another one that found out about this site on seek.com.au....

Haven't been offered the scholarship, but have my own domain name...

Been blogging since September....am still waiting for my first pay!

I'm sure it's just around the corner....

Hi Paula

I'm another seek.com.au convert. And again, I didn't get the 'scholarship'.

My domain blog seems to make me a couple of dollars a week (I think the highest amount I got in a single week was around $7).

I think you get paid commissions on the month after the month after the commission was made. (Did any one understand that? I didn't). What I mean is for commissions made in October, you get paid sometime in early December.

Congrats on this post. Your stats should definitely be up now.

Well, seek and ye shall find...a hell of a lot of us!
I too was sought and found via 'seek.com'...twas not the money (people get paid??), twas the opportunity to just write according to your style not the style dictated to you by publication criteria (I'm a journalist).

...and I guess I'm not getting that 'scholarship' after all...sigh...high hopes...dashed.

Just to clear up some misunderstanding in Paula's post, Orble does not pay bloggers $40/week once you "write consistently over a 2 week period and your posts attract some comments and votes"...

Jasmine's e-mail says that: If you are able to write consistently over a 2 week period and your posts attract some comments and votes we would then be happy to place your blog on a separate domain name and pay you a commission on any revenue your blog generates.

This was made in reference to the switch from a regular Orble blog to a Domain blog.

For any other queries, of course you can visit Orble's FAQ page at: http://www.orble.com/orble-faq/ which also explains payments and what not.

I have a domain blog and I do not get $40 a week. In fact according to my traffic stats, I am making by commission about 59-cents a week.
That certainly is not $40 a week. Plus I usually am listed as orble blog # 123-140 in terms of traffic. Does that make sense?

Hi Paula

To answer to your questions of creating Category (without you clicking and searching everywhere again). You need to do these few steps:

1. Look at your top right of browser (it's usually gloss blue bar). Search for My Orble.

2. You should be in the Control Panel. At the moment, you should see your very first Blog listed there.

3. Below your blog name (my My Blogs list), search for Modify.

4. Scroll down your screen until you have found Post Categories section, below there will be a list box for you to add your categories.

5. Just click on Add and a small window with a text box will pop up for you to key it in.

6. Once you have added, remember to click on Modify Blog at the bottom of the page.

And Viola! You have Categories in your BLOG!

Hope this helps.

Well you sure implied a negative sentiment for the post: "No offence, but what is actually great about the post?"

Maybe I was a bit harsh saying you said it was a crappy post, regardless my point still stands. Some people like the post, some don't.

I myself don't mind it, people want attention I guess this is how they do it, like Adrian and his sexulaly related topics which attract a lot of feedback and commentary for instnance, sur eh eodes it high and thick, but at the end of the day he's looking to build readership.

I've caved in myself more than once, though not in the same way. For instance I have nothing new to report, or to do, so I just cobbled something together.

Comment by Peeling

What's great about it is that she had the courage to post that the 40$ bait is a bit of a con job. Maybe not legally speaking, but it's really stretching the line between a genuinely vague offer and deliberate obfuscation.

All I did was send an email asking about it and then shut up about it when I found that I wasn't going to get the money. She's done much more than that, and if the Orble owners have even a modicum of decency, they'll change and/or pull down the 40$ gambit. That's why it's a great post.

My 2 cents. If anyone feels insulted, so be it. The only reason I'm still here is that there seem to be some really nice people posting on the various blogs and I'd rather come along here once a day and spend some time making friends, than flushing the whole gig down the loo.

Comment by Ahmed

November 23rd 2006 11:23
Meh, business is business, you gotta pull people in and keep them, which is essentially what the $40 'bait' is.

No one is being forced to write anything down, if you don't get the $40 thing you can stop. $40 isn't much though, no matter how I look at it, I could easily get a part time job that pays more.

I don't see how you were playing with me for your own amusement, honestly I don't see why you got mad with me to begin with, I don't mind being wrong, if you simply said you weren't angry and that I misunderstood what you said I would have thought it fine. Not like the worlds going to end.

Sorry to pile on when you're already bein blitzed, but I have to make it clear.

I read it, and it said $40 for the first 2 months, then you share revenue. After I sign up and start writing, I find that's not the way it works - It's a "scolarship", which you're not entitled to - Take it or leave it. And since you're writing, same as any other blog network, you might as well continue.

The $40 is only when the orble staff chooses your blog for "scholarship". I haven't been paid yet since I'm no longer in the top blogs list and I get few clicks compared to others, but I'm working on it.

Comment by YouGottaSeeThis

November 23rd 2006 14:46
Wow! What a commotion a simple question has caused. You're right, the original email does say that only after 2 weeks of consistent blogging would I be
"considered for the weekly blogging 'scholarship' which offers $40 pw for the first 8 weeks as your new blog is establishing itself."

I realize the $40 per week is not guaranteed. But all I wanted to know is if there is ANYONE OUT THERE AT ALL IN CYBERSPACE who has a top blog driving lots of traffic to Orble that's making the 40 bucks per week scholarship? It's amazing to me that no one has responsed saying, "Yes, I've made that 40 bucks a week."

And I'm definitely all for pro-bono writing, I do a lot of it. But right now I also write for Associated Content mainly, and of course, my sickeningly promoted blog and my time is limited.

I'm learning all about ways to monetize my writing, and I do enough free stuff for the love of writing, but I'm learning to turn this blogging thing into a serious career from home so I'm optimizing my time with the most cost effective gigs.

These responses are very helpful to me and very telling...But I like Orble so far, it's seems like a great community...

Just to clear a few things up:

There are about 15 bloggers who are paid $40 for writing every week. They were with Orble from the very start, about 7 months ago now. They also happen to make up a big chunk of the top 20 because their blogs have been around for a while (the search engines like old domains) -- and they have been consistent writers.

There are 8 scholarship bloggers at any one time as we award one every week and they last for eight weeks. I don't blame people for not owning up to having one of these as it would put a lot of pressure on them.

Everyone else on a domain blog works on a 50% commission basis.

For info on when you get paid read the FAQ.

We are no longer giving away free domain blogs except to the weekly scholarship winner. You are able to buy a domain blog for $95 (and Orble will not take a cut in revenue) and regular Orble blogs will remain free. For more info on this change see This Post..

We do advertise on Seek and it is a good way to attract new writers to Orble.

The top ten blogs make on average $30 USD per week.

Making money from blogs (and content on the internet in general) is hard -- a lot harder than I thought it would be when I first started Orble. If you are blogging you should (at least in part) be doing it for reasons other than making money as the time you put in will probably not be worth the monetary reward -- at least in the short term -- and you will need to be having fun to make the distance.

I was one of the original 20 bloggers that helped start the community - writing on Sydney diary. Even though i don't write on here often anymore because of work constraints i check back every now and then and this post has really grabbed my interest. I did enjoy a regular $40 a week income for quite some time and it led to a number of avenues including my current job as a content writer for websites.

Jon is exactly right about how hard it is to build up a site like this and make a profit and unfortunately that means that writers don’t get paid much. However it definitely goes both ways, for instance, my current affairs blog is currently sitting at 128 out of 966 blogs, it gets about 35 readers a day and i havn't written anything for months. So there are some 800 blogs getting less than 35 readers a day, making less than $2 a week for orble...

I'm sure Jon would love to pay everyone $40 a week and if there weren’t 800 blogs with less than 35 readers/day there would be more guaranteed money on offer.

Just remember, if you want to make money, you absolutely have to be topical. No matter what subject you're writing about, if you follow the media closely and write up something on it, then you'll get readers. It may not be what you want to do, but it certainly makes money and will get you in the top 20.

I don't write for money with The Tack Room because my subject matter is very specialised. I have been writing since august with Orble and the number of total blogs is bloating consistently. Would it not make more sense to limit the number of new blogs so that existing writers have a better chance of attracting readers?

Wow... First I think we all need a long deep breath... in... and out...

I admit I earn less then i expected to. However, fact remains I have a free dowmain blog and all the tools to maintain it. W00t.

My aim is to reach that lovely 10 dolar make so i can get paid, say i've been paid, then never care about the money part again.

Money just messes shizzle up.

For those of you just starting off, and frustrated with your commission, making money on the internet isn't easy. Sure, you could set up your own blog and take all the ad revenue, but being in the Orble network gives you shared traffic, and higher Google rank.

I have a personal blog on the side, and it gets much less traffic than my Orble blog.

What it comes down to is: how interesting are your posts, and how long you've been around.

Blogs like mine and Jimbo's have been around from the start, and we pull in traffic because google ranks older sites higher.

Blogs like Homer Joyce's rocketed up when he started it because people like to read his posts.

The other factor is how much your adwords are worth. A single click can bring anywhere from $0.01 to $60! Google keeps those rich adwords a secret, but most people think they're usually about loans and tech keywords.

The best thing about Orble, for me, is that the community of writers is interesting and knowledgeable. And there aren't trolls hanging around, trying to wreck it all!

You are absolutely right Brenton. ^_^

I still have $2 to go (net 50% commission) and I will work hard to find great articles to post in order to get the traffic and readers interested. ^_^

Nice comment Cibby.
True about the Orble community.
Curious about the adwords .... ?
I wonder what the words: blood, death, werewolves, vampires and zombies are worth ...?
