Successful Blogging

August 25th 2006 01:01
Hi Everyone,

Someone asked for a super-quick summary of my advice for successful blogging. I thought I would post the answer here as well:

===============================

Hi John,

My advice would be:

1) Read the blogging tips blog, especially the part about the search engines. Most successful blogs get a lot of search engine traffic so that's important.

Also read Cibbuano's guide to blogging which has some great advice.

2) Comment on other peoples blogs and they will usually return the favour. It will help with your Karma as well. Blogs with lots of comments are much more interesting.

3) Write about on subjects that interest you. If you are interested in what you are writing about other people usually pick up on it and get carried along.

4) Post regularly. This is important to keep your regular readers coming back as well as keeping the search engines happy.

5) Be patient. It takes at least 2 months before you will start getting decent traffic. It takes time to establish a rapport with your readers and search engines don't refer much traffic to very young websites.

6) Use pictures in your posts! Try to make your blog look nice by playing with the blog settings and submit a professional looking title image.

Thats it!

Jon.

Welcome to Orble News

August 24th 2006 06:59
Hi Everyone,

As the email list was getting a little long I thought it was about time I started an Orble News blog to keep everyone informed.

There have been a couple of changes on Orble in the last day or so which you may have noticed:

1) Blogs which are hosted on a separate domain name will now be called "Domain Blogs" (inventive huh!). Currently most of the Orble blogs are Domain blogs.

2) Anyone can now create one or more regular Orble blogs without applying first. These blogs will be hosted on the orble.com domain and will be promoted to a Domain blog if they do well. Exactly what "do well" means we are not quite sure yet and it will probably develop over time.

For the moment, if you start a new blog, post regularly for a couple of weeks, and attract a few comments or ratings you will be asked if you want to host the blog on a separate domain name which Orble will pay for.

The main benefits of having a separate domain name are increased traffic, revenue (regular Orble blogs will not receive a commission for the moment), and credibility.

3) Everyone has now been given a Karma score. If you run a Domain blog your Karma score will be at least 2 and can go as high as 10. The value is related to the amount of traffic your blog receives, the number of comments and ratings your posts attract, and the number of comments you have made on Orble blogs (not just your own).

You can see your own Karma by going to your homepage.

Every time you rate a post its score will increase by the amount of Karma you have. Any posts you write will also start off with a score equal to your Karma.

All this is designed to encourage people to contribute to the Orble community in a constructive way.

4) All the blog stats have now been moved online. To view your blog stats go to my.orble.com. Everyone will still receive their email traffic reports as well. The commission that each blog is earning will also be reported online from next week, although some blogs may have this already. To view commission stats use the weekly view. This is all very much in beta so please report any bugs you encounter.

Thanks all!

If you have any questions post a comment

Regards,
Jon.
