ISLAM

January 11th 2007 16:56
A great deal has been made about George ‘Dubya's decision to send more troops into Iraq. The left-wingers will rail and rant against it and even some of George's fellow Republicans are wondering what he was thinking. A recent article written by Robert Fulford may supply some answers.
Mr. Fulford writes, "As part of their culture of death, Islamic terrorists now use young women (and even occasionally a grandmother) as suicide murderers. The appearance of the first female killers, a few years ago, shocked people who believed they knew something about Islam. It was particularly appalling that Hamas, who claim to be pious, sent out girls wearing belts of explosives. Surely Islamic law forbids it." Perhaps it does. But it seems that Islam is very flexible in its beliefs. Granted, that too can be said for the Catholic and Protestant religions we adhere to here, but we do not advocate using suicide-murderers to render our opponents helpless. We'll debate them to death instead.

"They had to face the virgins question. A young man who blows himself up in order to murder innocent people will be rewarded in heaven, it is said, by having 72 virgins at his disposal. What do girls and women get? Yaari says they are promised they can choose for their own one of the young male martyrs. Terrorist groups have distributed brochures on this point in the universities of the West Bank, describing suicide bombing as romantic.", says Mr. Fulford, referring to Ehud Yaari. I suppose in some twisted way suicide murders can be romantic when it is comes across as boys getting virgins and girls getting the pick of the litter of those stupid enough to blow themselves up. How insane can Islam be?
Yaari says that a speech by bin Laden is a masterpiece. Maybe. You do have to admire a man or woman of charisma, and bin Laden has it just as Slick Willy Clinton did. Sadly the same can't be said for George. He just goes about getting the job done.

"They have adopted what Yaari calls "The doctrine of persistent conflict," the most promising version of warfare they've come up with since the West developed superior weaponry centuries ago. They can't have victory anytime in the near future, but they can deny victory to the West -- in Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebanon and several other places. "The Arabs feel they have the answer to the West in military terms." Working within that doctrine, of persistent conflict, Islamists may pause for a ceasefire now and then, perhaps even sign a peace treaty, but they won't give up. Eventually, they assume, the West will collapse under terrorist pressure.", Mr. Fulford writes. Seems to me that George knows this and, swimming upstream, plans on showing the terrorists the might of the USA. As unpopular as he might be today, George W. Bush will be thanked by the free world in and of the future for the daring stance he has taken.
"Later it will expand to put the whole world under Islamic law. This is the one thing on which the Taliban, al-Qaeda, Hamas etc. all agree. Their strategy rests on a powerful component, time. In the past, time has often been the friend of warriors, notably those who lay siege to a town or a castle and wait for starvation to defeat the inhabitants. But time has never been so central to strategy as it is with Islamists. Their enemies, above all the restless, impatient democracies, worry constantly about the length of a war.", continues Mr. Fulford. The liberal left wingers can't, or don't want to recognize this. They want peace talks. Like Chamberlain had with Hitler. George knows it is the wrong way to go and unless you want to bow towards Mecca 5 times a day, maybe you'd better give him some support.

SLOW NEWS DAY

January 10th 2007 18:59
It's a slow news day so I'm taking a page from the major networks and putting in a filler. Bear with me.
The other day I watched a program on PBS called ‘Resurgence of Anti-Semitism in the 21st Century'. I am not about to do a review of this program, I'll leave that to the pros. Watch for it in your local listings and watch it.
We've had much discussion recently about the Arab - Israeli conflict and this program can teach us all a lot. It is interesting to note that about 800 AD the Jews and Arabs could live side by side in peace. In fact, Jews, Muslims and Christians all lived together without too much problem. The show goes into the facts of what changed in the meantime to make Muslims hate the other two religions so much that they want to annihilate them. It stood out in my mind that when a young Muslim girl (she appeared to be about 4 or 5 years old) was asked what she thought of Jews, she replied she hated them. When asked why, she replied that Jews were sons and daughters of pigs and apes. Where would she get such an idea? From her parents. Where would they get such an idea? From the radical Imams who preach hatred.
Not all Muslims are terrorists, but they seem to be cultivating a new generation that believes Islam should rule the world, no matter what. The radical Imams seem bent on believing and teaching the Protocols of Zionism, which has been for years proven to be false. And this wild preaching is reaching the masses of Muslims who, in their ignorance, begin to believe it and pass it on to their children.
Some people can't understand what the US is doing in Iraq, or what Canada is doing in Afghanistan. Beside getting rid of the type of terrorists who would fly an airplane into the World Trade Centers, maybe they are trying to bring a bit of freedom to an oppressed people. Maybe they are trying to drag them out of their 11th century thinking and get them up to speed with the rest of the world.
I love PBS. This program showed both sides of the argument and made no judgement one way or the other. It showed the fallacy of the current Islamic thinking and it showed those who supported it. It left the judgement up to the viewer. I know PBS will re-run this show, so watch for it and then watch it.
This leads me to my next point. Canada's CBC network just launched a new show called ‘Little Mosque On The Prairie'. If you can get CBC this is a must see. It is a comedy set in a small town in Saskatchewan, post 9/11, and revolves round Muslims trying to make a living. It's a comedy and it's hilarious. It's on Tuesday nights but there is a repeat tonight of the inaugural show. Check it out. I think you'll like it. It shows both the tolerance and the bigotry against these people. I think it's great.

THE ALMOST NEW REPUBLIC

January 9th 2007 12:27
THE HARPER GOVERNMENT
I received an article the other from my friend Jim Stillman, that was published in The New Republic. It was written by Gregory Levey, an ex-pat Canadian living in New York now. He teaches at Ryerson University.
Anyone reading this article, who is not aware of Canadian politics, might get the wrong idea about Canada. I will try to fill in a few facts.
Mr. Levey writes, "In 2003, as the United States went to war against Iraq, Harper--then the Canadian opposition leader--published an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal repudiating the Canadian government's decision not to join the war. "This is a serious mistake," he wrote. "The Canadian Alliance--the official opposition in parliament--supports the American and British position because we share their concerns, their worries about the future if Iraq is left unattended to, and their fundamental vision of civilization and human values." This is very true. Canada has supported Britain in two world wars and there is nothing wrong with going back to what we used to do, rather than what the Liberals wanted to do. And if that includes supporting the US in their War on Terrorism, so be it. After all, we are neighbours and if you can't go next door to borrow a cup of sugar, well, that's not the type of neighbour I'd want. Canada owes the US a great deal and it's time we started paying back.
He goes on to say, "Though Canada has not sent troops to Iraq, in May the Harper government voted to extend and expand Canada's mission in Afghanistan, where an average of about 2000 troops have been deployed since 2001, despite the fact that Canadian soldiers there are being killed in vastly disproportionate numbers and the war is consequently becoming increasingly unpopular in Canada." The fact is that all parties voted to send troops to Afghanistan in the first place. Nobody seemed to be listening when it was made clear they were going in as a peacemaking force, not a peacekeeping one like the Liberals made us out to be. Canadian soldiers are not being killed in disproportionate numbers. In any war there will be casualties, and that is a shame, but it is also a fact. One cannot extrapolate one particular day's worth of casualties into the whole term of the war. If you did that, then what we suffered at Vimy Ridge and Dieppe would put our casualty list beyond comprehension. We would have suffered losses in the millions. The ones who moan about losses seem not to know that in the 6 years Canada has been in Afghanistan, 43 soldiers have been killed. An average of just over 7 per year. This is disproportionate? Any soldier killed in duty is a shame and is grieved not only by the family, but the country as well. But 7 per year? We kill a lot more than that each year here at home with people driving drunk.
Mr. Levey writes, "Lately, his government has even begun to take on Iran, which Harper has called "the biggest single threat the planet faces." A lot of Liberals don't understand this. They would rather send an organization like the ACLU to defend the Arabs when they board a plane and start acting like terrorists or defend a truck driver smuggling a couple of Iraqis into a sea port than admit there are already terrorist cells in both the USA and Canada just waiting for the word to strike again.
Further in the report, he writes, "It is no coincidence that a large part of the Conservative Party's electoral base is from the oil-rich West, from which Harper himself hails. That base is also composed of a strong religious and socially conservative element, who have never before been vocal in Canadian federal politics, but whose presence can be clearly felt in the government's current domestic agenda. Canada's legalization of gay marriage in 2005 energized this constituency, and they provided critical support to Harper's election bid last year." The gay marriage idea was forced through Parliament by then PM Paul Martin, who made his party vote his way. Stephen Harper made a suggestion to open the issue again to let MP's vote the way their constituents wanted them to vote. He proposed a vote to hold the vote again. With more then 52% of the population against gay ‘marriage' you'd think it would be a done deal. Not so. Like all politicians, the majority of our elected representatives forgot who they were working for and voted not to vote on the issue.
Mr. Levey writes, "While Harper enjoys strong support in rural areas, particularly in Canada's rugged Western provinces, he is less popular in ethnically-diverse cities like Toronto and Vancouver, and in French Canada." This is true. Toronto and Vancouver have large populations of new immigrants. A lot of them probably shouldn't be here, but the lax Liberal immigration policy got them into Canada in the first place. Why wouldn't they vote Liberal, to show their thanks, instead of Conservative. As for ‘French Canada', Quebec is out to feather their own nest and will stand against any other party just to get more money.
Mr. Levey finishes his article with, "After the Democratic victory in the midterm elections and the conservative turn Canada has taken over the last year, I doubt many of my marriage proposals from 2004 are still on the table. But perhaps my inbox will now start to fill with queries from Republicans." I think the midterm elections in the US were just a speed-bump, meant to wake up the Republicans in their thinking and policies. I know Canada is better for having a PM like Harper and perhaps, more importantly, having a minority government. We had a Liberal majority for the last 13 years and all that happened was that Canada was turning into the laughing stock of the world. With a minority government, Harper has to tread lightly, but maybe we can get things done and regain some respect.

CONFESSIONS

CONFESSIONS
Just a short one and I really don't expect any replies.
I'd like to thank SL Bradish for being a mentor. She's taught me to think things through and put my arguments in order. It makes sense and if anyone wants to take an opposing view, so be it, but I can find whatever point of view I've taken and argue fight back. Ms Bradish will deny she ever did anything for me. I will argue that with her. Thank you

SALIM MANSUR

Salim Mansur
You know, Salim had it right when he wrote, "When an isolationist America was awakened after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbour, it pushed aside all doubts about its commitment to freedom and took the war to its just conclusion against the modern barbarians in Europe and Asia."
I've taken some flak for being pro-American, but I can't think of a better neighbour to have. America does not start wars. When bitten, she fights back. With a vengeance. America leaves no doubt as to who's is the largest. Canada is finally getting back on stream and hopefully it doesn't take us too long to arrive there. We proved our worth at Vimy Ridge and throughout both WW I and WW II. We are getting it together again in Afghanistan

A SPADE IS A SPADE

A SPADE IS A SPADE
I am not taking any credit for this one. Michael Coren wrote the original article in the Toronto Sun on Dec. 9, 2006 and I think he happens to be right. The premise is calling a spade a spade and to hell with our politically correct nonsense.
We used to have whores. Prostitutes. Hookers. Tarts. Everyone knew what they were and what they did, Today, we are supposed to call them 'sex trade workers'. I guess this is to encompass the topless massage parlour workers. The ‘escorts' who are hired as dates but what they do on their own time is nobodies business. Give me a break. They are all of the same mold

ISRAEL cont'd

January 3rd 2007 14:26
ISRAEL cont'd
I recently wrote that I could think of no better neighbour to have than the USA. The reasoning behind this thought was that the US protects us from enemies and God knows, we can use all the help we can get. Our Liberal government decimated our fighting forces to a point where, even as peacekeepers, we have to hitch rides with whatever army is going in to do the actual fighting. Canadians have grown so accustomed to this that they can't understand what we are trying to do in Afghanistan today.
Someone took me to task for being grateful to the Americans and suggested that I had my priorities mixed up because I failed to note how the Yanks were screwing us in the softwood lumber deal. Geez, is that ever small potatoes. We have won every fight brought to the courts and I have to give the Americans an A for tenacity in their appeals on the case. We won and left a billion dollars on the table. A shame, but the issue is settled, finally. Let's both get over it. There are bigger fish to fry

HE'S DEAD

December 31st 2006 14:36
HE'S DEAD
Last night, Dec. 29th, 2006, Saddam Hussein was hanged and sent to meet his maker. He tried to make himself out as a martyr. I question this. He seemed to have no feelings for his sons when they met their deaths. He was found hiding like the coward that he was in a ‘spider-hole' some 3 years ago. He, like all killers, suddenly ‘found Jesus' and asked that all Iraqis forgive the US for those ‘trespassing against those who trespass against us'. Who was he trying to kid?
He was right up there with Hitler and Stalin but at least they had the decency to destroy themselves rather than have the world do it for them. Saddam didn't kill as many people as the former did. But he did kill more people in a more brutal way. Hitler experimented with gassing. Saddam perfected it. Stalin thought sending people to gas chambers was a waste of time. He sent them to gulags instead. He was closer to the truth. He got cheap labour and if you happened to die in the process, so what? There were always more people to arrest to keep up the labour end of the supply and demand chain

ALL QUIET

December 29th 2006 15:03
ALL QUIET
I just finished re-reading All Quiet On The Western Front. I had read it years ago, in public school I think, and though I didn't pay much attention to it then, I read it through different eyes today. It really should be required reading for anyone remotely interested in what's happening in the war torn spots of the globe today.
Written in 1929 and told through the eyes of a German soldier serving in WW I, it could well be written as seen through the eyes of an Allied soldier. Neither pro nor anti war, it gives us a view of what soldiers face when they go into battle and when they are at rest. The underlying theme being that the soldier does not want to be where he is

Why Israel Can't Win

December 29th 2006 05:06
WHY ISRAEL CAN'T WIN
I've stated before that Peter Worthington is a veteran and respected journalist. I will quote him extensively here and hope some of our more liberal friends will get the message. His main topic was why the west won't win the war on terrorism, but I'd like to back it up a notch.
I've been criticized for being pro-Israeli and anti-Palestinian. So be it. I can live with that. Let me say that I am pro-democracy, be it Israel, the USA, Canada or the UK. Let me also say that I don't believe a majority of Muslims are terrorists. It's the rabid fanatics who get the headlines
