About Me
So, who am I? I'm a closet attention-seeker who likes to spend time in the background, observing things that people never normally get to see. Absorbing things that people don't really want to know about themselves or others.

I'm in my mid-twenties and I still feel like a girl, learning all about the world. I love eccentricity - people showing their true colours without regard for what society thinks. I write for a living which was something I always envisioned but never believed, if that makes any sense.

Oh, and I'm obsessed with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

The Cult of Celebrity

February 12th 2007 05:37
I can't help but notice that lately celebrity seems to be less about the fame and respect, and more about being on a fast track to self-destruction.

In recent times, this is aptly illustrated by tragic divas such as Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Nicole Richie, and Britney Spears. The new Hollywood Brat Pack. And the modern-day grandmammy of this brat pack is Anna Nicole Smith herself, the wannabe Monroe that finally got her wish for a Monroe-ish death.

Of course, you have to feel sorry for poor Daniellynn. Her mother was spaced out on god knows what, and three people are claiming to be her father. She may inherit half a billion dollars but that's no reason to be deprived of a proper family. On the other side of the coin, though, could Daniellynn have even had a hope of a normal life while Anna Nicole was still around? At least she has the chance now to fade into some form of obscurity.

But back to Anna Nicole herself. Dying on the floor of a Florida hotel room. I wonder how long the conspiracy theories will last. So far I've heard that Daniellynn is actually Anna Nicole's daughter with her son Daniel being the father, that Howard K Stern killed her, that it was a plot by her ex-husband's family, and that she committed suicide. Somehow I think the simplest theory will be the right one - that she overdosed.

Sadly enough, it has me thinking of who might be next in line. Many people I've spoken to have expressed surprise that Lindsay Lohan hasn't gone into a death spiral already. Lindsay isn't even known for her movies anymore - it's all about the drugs and the partying, and the inability to save her own life by just sticking to a rehab program. Nicole Richie has one of two choices. Distance herself from the brat pack, put on weight and live, or she can stay where she is and completely fade away into nothing. Paris Hilton? Well, she's the girl that found fame by doing absolutely nothing. Unfortunately, her attempts to hold onto her fame means that we're all getting sick of her so she's burning her own, overexposed star out. There's only so much notoriety that we can take. And Britney Spears. What happened to that poor girl? It's a weird world when we start thinking that Kevin Federline is more respectable and a better parents to the kids than Britney is. She doesn't have long to wise up before an unforgiving public chews her up and spits her out.

"Celebrity" Survivor

September 14th 2006 05:07
Does anyone else out there have a sick fascination with "Celebrity" Survivor?

It's filled with d-list celebrities, has Dicko hosting it, they still manage to look like they're at a country club and I can't stop watching it.

One of my favourite parts had to be when Fiona Horne started bitching about people but tried to be nice while doing it. How does that work, exactly? "Oh, *insert name* is lovely and the goddess has good things in store for them but they're just so negative and they don't help out around camp" or what the hell ever.

Contradiction, much?

The boys are all muscle bound, the girls still have glowing skin and their clothes are clean! That's just not right. How much do you want to bet that there's a real shower and toilet somewhere off-camera? I can't see Amber Petty or Imogen Bailey or any of the girls using the good old hole in the ground. And I've only seen one guy whip out the tackle for the good bush piss. How much do you wanna bet that there's a crew member right beside him with a bucket of water? And how suss was it that there were conveniently all the tribe members just ten feet away?! I smell a set up.

I remember reading in a magazine that some survivors were saying that "it's really tough just like the real Survivor and we're not doing it easy at all!" Um...can I just point something out? The real Survivors were never doing interviews that came out during the show's run whining about how hard it was!

Kym Johnson had the right idea escaping while she could salvage some dignity. Sad to say, she gets more dignity from being Jerry Springer's dance partner than she does for being on that crap show.

Give me back real Survivor already. I want Jeff with his biting observations - not Dicko with that pseudo-psychiatrist voice at Tribal Council. I want the real bitching back, not this fake-assed trying to make yourself sound like you're a good person while chewing the hell out of someone. Celebrity Survivor is far too PC for my tastes.

That's it, it's Survivor Lite!

Well, bring back the full-fat, full-calorie version and I'll eat it up like nothing before. And the next season sees the tribes divided by ethnicity. This should be good...

Are Scalpers Destroying the World?

September 11th 2006 05:33
Now, I know that that sounds dramatic and that scalpers couldn't possibly be reponsible for the destruction of the world (a certain American is more likely to be the cause of that but no political ranting here). But how many of us are being denied the chance to see the bands or events that we would dearly love to?

Example number one. Tool tickets went on sale a while back and completely sold out in fifteen minutes. Checking eBay a while later while I was totally bored, I found two floor tickets going for $15,000. And no, it wasn't a joke bid, as far as I can tell! More realistically, there were Tool tickets going for $1500 plus.

Example number two. Homebake tickets sold out within four hours, and despite the organisers' attempts to prevent scalping by not releasing the tickets til early November, there were tickets up on eBay within hours at a markup of 200 percent or more.

Example number three. Red Hot Chili Peppers (a band that is particularly close to my heart). I tried to get tickets at each one of the three pre-sales before giving up and waiting for the general public sale. I was lucky and got more tickets than I expected to get. But I know at least half a dozen people more that were on the Ticketek website, on the phone to Ticketek and waiting in the Ticketek line, only to secure crappy seats or to miss out altogether.

But you had extra tickets, I hear you say. What did I do with them? Well, I certainly didn't put them on eBay for one. I gave them to my co-worker at exactly face value - she didn't pay a cent more for them than I did. I thought that was the fairest way to deal with it.

Scalpers make it hard for the genuine fans because they buy as many tickets to an event as they can possibly get - not even giving a damn about the event itself - and onselling them purely to make a profit. This just seems fairly shitty to me. I'm not anti-capitalist in the least. I love stuff just as much as the next person. Scalping, however, just seems dirty, greedy, grubby and wrong.

Let's not forget the people that enable the scalpers. eBay, for starters, by not suspending or kicking off people that are onselling tickets for massive amounts of money. The promoters and Ticketek for not finding a way to stop tickets from being scalped in the first place.

And, sadly enough, the people that are most at fault are the ones that buy the tickets from the scalpers for obscene amounts of money. Sure, they get to see their favourite band or whatever, but they are perpetuating an endless cycle. If no one bought from the scalpers, scalpers would soon cease to exist.

What would we do if bands stopped touring altogether as a way to stop scalpers? After all, they're not seeing any of that extra cash, are they?

The Cult of MySpace

September 11th 2006 00:29
I can admit it. I'm completely and totally addicted to MySpace. It's not the blogging features, or the bulletins or even any of the other "features". It's because you can find almost anyone you care to, and even people that you don't.

I used to be a LiveJournal fiend - updating my personal journal with multiple posts a day, all with the purpose of keeping people clued in to my oh-so-interesting life. Of course, it wasn't that interesting and the only people that bothered to read it were my friends. I still have my LiveJournal though. I don't think I could bear to part with all the observations I made throughout my teens and early 20s

Is individuality overrated?

September 10th 2006 12:49
I was at festival in Newtown this past weekend. For those that may not know, Newtown is one of the homes for alternative culture in Sydney. It's largely populated by hippies, goths, punks etc. Essentially it's the home of the counter-cultures.

Anyway, the festival was called "Under the Blue Moon", and its target audience were goths. Don't get me wrong, I respect that there are events that target a certain audience but it makes me wonder - is individuality overrated? In a world where there is a celebration for almost every type of culture, is there even such a thing as true individuality anymore
