What constitutes bad manners? - by D. Armenta

Online etiquette

March 21st 2007 05:50
Am I alone here, or does anyone else find obscure acronyms in posts or threads for the general public rude? Well, maybe not so much rude as thoughtless. I'm not talking about the well-known acronyms like LMAO or ROTFL. I'm talking about random acronyms that substitute for sentences, like JICYWTK (just in case you wanted to know)..they give me a headache! They break my concentration on the thread or message itself! Am I being too sensitive here?
How about forwards? Is it bad form to forward every single article or joke one reads to all of one's friends?

D. Armenta,

LMAO I already know, but perhaps you would be good enough to enlighten me on what ROFL or ROTFL really means? I've wondered about it for weeks now and never asked...

Otherwise, I truly agree that if you are going to abbreviate a sentence that only you know… it is extremely bad manners indeed…

Loved this post,

Lilla …

D. Armenta ...

If I get an email with FW:? ... (unless it's from one specific person) ... I delete it without reading it ... even more so if that person hasn't had the common courtesy or decency to write me even the briefests of notes ...

I honestly can't stand all that shit ... It's like people saying to me, 'Aren't I funny? I can forward on stuff by other people who are genuinely funny, and you'll think it's me who's really funny? ...

As to computer-speak like ROFL and LMFAO ? ... I use it sparingly ... I'm not totally against it ... but if it's excessive? ... Like if someone uses LOL all the time? ... It's like FFS! Give it a break and type something sensible for once in your life, you moron! (Dont' get me started on excessive use of emoticons ... where you can't even decipher what the person is supposedly saying ...

And if people are going to write new computer-speak ... they should bracket what it is until it comes into common usage ...

Apart from that? NFI.

David ...

Sure--that's one of the few I know.."Rolling on the floor laughing." Hey, look at that! It *can* be written out...Thanks for clearing that one up Lilla! I'm with you, David..can't stand forwards, delete them immediately without looking..

I'll forward some truly funny jokes, but only after cleaning off all those irritating arrows with an e-mail stripper and BCC'ing it to hide addresses. I use LOL a lot, but everyone knows what that means. The rest of the stuff is for Blackberry users I guess, so they don't get thumb cramps. If I can't get the acronym right away, I skip over it and try to get the context of what the person is trying to say.

I usually only use the really well known ones like LOL, ROFL, PML (piss myself laughing), OMG occassionally (Oh my goodness).

Others like IYKWIM - (if you know what I mean) I tend to type out in their entirety.
