One Subject per Post

June 24th 2006 05:36

One of the most common mistakes new bloggers (and even some older ones) make is to cram more than one subject into a single post. This is especially so when you get into the habit of doing one post per day -- you just put everything you have to say today into today's post right? -- wrong!

The most important reason not to do this (apart from confusing your readers) is that the search engines will not be able to tell what the post is about.

Say for instance if you were writing a post called "A history of western philosophy" which included sections of a paragraph or more in length on a number of different philosophers. You would be better off splitting this post into a number of separate posts, each about a different philosopher.

You should start by creating an introductory post called "A history of western philosophy" which contains your initial remarks along with a list of each philosopher you are going to write about. The name of each philosopher should link to a separate post. This way the search engines will be able to tell exactly what each post is about and send there anyone who is searching for the information it contains.

Another example could be a post entitled "My 5 Favourite Gadgets". Instead of listing a review of each gadget within the same post you should create an introductory post which contains a list of your favourite gadgets which links to a review of each gadget in a separate post.

NOTE
I have also noticed a number of people doing the opposite of the above -- splitting one long post on a single subject into two or more shorter ones, usually with "part 1" and "part 2" in the title. In terms of having the search engines refer readers you are far better off having one longer post which contains all the information while keeping the title as simple as possible.
