On the Move

November 24th 2010 23:40

Hine and I both had a peace to leave Hamilton. The house still had not sold but that was understandable with rival gangs living either side. The children were thrilled with the idea of going somewhere different. My eldest son was now living with his mother. Together we boarded the night train to Wellington.

Many of our friends came to see us off as our family embarked on an adventure with Jesus. The morning sun greeted us in Wellington as we crossed the road ready to board the waiting ferry. Cook Strait is renowned for rough weather but today it was like a mirror. Out in the middle I remember seeing some dolphins.

On the other side in Picton, the train was waiting to take us to Christchurch. Some friends of ours had already made the move and were only to happy to take us in until we found accommodation of our own. A matter of a few weeks and we found as mall cottage beside the beach in Brighton.

In a large city, it should be easy to find employment. It just did not happen. One man was almost in tears because he wanted to give me a job but someone turned up with more experience. Walking home from one of my campaigns that consisted of cold calling prospective employers I could not but help notice one of my neighbours had put up a new fence.

I asked for the wood from the old one in return for painting her new one. She agreed. When the job was finished, she contracted me to paint her other fence and we agreed on a price. Then her gardens needed weeding. Did I know how to make a crazy path?

The man across the road saw me working at her house and hired me to paint his roof. Another elderly widow further down our little street wanted me to weed her garden. The local publican who also lived in the same street hired me as his permanent gardener. Before I knew it, I had work on all over the place and it all started with painting a widows fence. If you go with God, God will go with you.
