Off-season Trades That Should Happen But Won't...Part 1
November 23rd 2011 18:06
Every year, in every sport, there are a half dozen or so trades that teams should make for the benefit of every team involved. But the General Managers are hesitant or scared to pull the trigger. The following trades are trades I suggest should be seriously considered. Keep in mind that I know they will never happen but I think it's worth exploring. Also, some of the "minor pieces" in the trade are not specific names and could be swapped out for different players. So let's get started...
TRADE 1:
Boston Red Sox Get:
LHP Brett Anderson (Oakland)
3B David Wright (New York)
New York Mets Get:
SP Daisuke Matsuzaka (Boston)
INF Jed Lowrie (Boston)
Oakland Athletics Get:
3B Kevin Youkilis (Boston)
The headliner in this trade is Kevin Youkilis. Now that Boston seems to be looking to make some changes (even minor ones) I think Youk can go. All I've heard is what a warrior he is and he's a gamer and how great he is. Then, this season, I heard that he was pointing fingers and was critical of teammates during September. I think if the Sox want to clean house and improve attitudes then Youk could be the first to go. Boston needs pitching and Anderson has been very good when's been healthy. If he can stay healthy he could be pretty good and rack up the wins in Boston. The Sox are already down Lackey next year (probably a blessing) and Anderson can be better than him. David Wright comes into to play 3B and could see an Adrian Beltre-esque revival in Fenway and get his career going again. Citi Field has helped kill his numbers. The Red Sox get a lot younger and I think are better all around. If they lose anything offensively they can survive. They have plenty of offense.
The Mets are in need of A LOT! I think it;s safe to say that Jose Reyes will not be in New York next season. So I think this is ultimately where the deal would get held up. They think David Wright is face of the franchise and they need to keep him to bring in fans. Fans will come if you win (except in South Forida). So I think the Mets tear it down and start all over. Daisuke should be much better in the NL and a pitcher's park as opposed to the AL and a hitter's park. Jed Lowrie has proven that he can be a very good infielder when healthy and could step right in at SS to replace Reyes. With Ruben Tejada at 2B it's the start of a good infield. The Mets need players and these two have won and could help get the Mets back on the right track.
In Oakland it's a no brainer. Youkilis is the token veteran that the A's acquire to either flip at the deadline or let walk as a Type-A free aent in the off-season. Oakland would be all in.
The Mets are the team I see holding this up. Maybe they need to get a bat from Oakland but I think the ground work is there to make something happen. Ultimately this trade benefits each team and either pushes them closer to the playoffs or gets them going on the road to rebuilding.

Youk at the plate. Brett Anderson is injury-prone, and this is probably because he throws so many sliders. The Mets might actually get the worst of it, because they could get a decent haul of prospects for Wright instead of Dice-K (they don't want that contract, what are they gonna do with him?) and Lowrie. Lowrie is at least a decent player, but the A's will come out of this as huge victors. All they did was trade Brett Anderson for Kevin Youkilis haha. This trade could happen if Oakland actually gives some other chips (Gio Gonzalez and a prospect). Youk for Anderson?
