Dreamer's Dance - by dreamersdance

Of first dates a second time around...

October 9th 2006 02:13
In all of the traumas and tragedies associated with my nearly-completed divorce, I thought I had covered all of my "to worry about" bases. I'd composed the "I knew you were cheating" letters to both him and her. I'd planned out the custody arrangement should something ever happen to me. I'd located all of the take-out food menus to compensate for my woeful lack of kitchen skills. I never even thought about the return to high school first date phobia.

It happened early last week. The timing and composition is enough to singlehandedly prove the existance of some higher force guiding our lives -- even if only for the purpose of humor.

The phone rang. (Side note. My mother recently informed me that in her day, a girl sat by the phone on Wednesday nights, willing it to ring. If you didn't get asked out by a guy on or before Wednesday night, you didn't go out that weekend. Asking on a Thursday was shockingly disrespectful. Interesting stuff. Of course, my mother was also from the school of thought that slow dancing should be at arm's length to "leave room for the Holy Spirit." In any case, this guy's timing passed mom's Wednesday night test. )

Bob says "Hello." (Side note #2 -- names have been changed to protect the innocent.) He kindly inquired after my daughter, who had been sick, and we exchanged some small talk about a Bible study we cohabitate. (Yup, you guessed it, side note #3: This is the cosmic hand part. I actually met "Bob" on the first day of the study -- the first thing I had done on my own since falling for my ex 9 years before. We chatted at a mixer, then discovered we were in the same group -- where he watched me bawl my eyes out as we went around the table introducing ourselves. It was the first time I'd said "I'm getting divorced" out loud. Now, nearly a year later, here we are and he's asking me on my first date post divorce. Makes a nice neat circle, doesn't it. )

Thus commenceth the asking out.
I did not know that a grown man could say "um" that many times without completing a sentence. Deffinitely a good thing he doesn't know I used to teach English.
I also did not know that my heart could beat that fast. I am sure he could hear it over the phone, which is probably what lead to all of the "um"s.

Needless to say, I said yes, I would attend the dinner with him -- at the beginning of November!!! a MONTH away.

Now I have a month to enjoy this delicious feeling of excitement, fear, terror, nausea, giddiness, agony, and excitement for nearly 30 days. And No, Mouse, I'm not afraid of the single mom's are easy thing, although I fully believe it. I figure the fact we're going to a church dinner, met at a church Bible study, and I live with my parents all make that a moot point. Then again, naivete has always been one of my gifts.

Any ideas what I should wear?
