NRL steps in to Investigate Broncos Cap Saga
As reported by NRL News yesterday, the Brisbane Broncos salary cap saga gained momentum today with the NRL indicating it is stepping in to investigate the rumour engulfing the Broncos. Speculation is rife that the Brisbane side of 2006 exceeded the 3.25 million salary cap, as the news spread through the NRL world - speculating punters rushed to back the Broncos for the 2007 wooden spoon, believing if the Broncos are guilty then a deduction in NRL points would follow. Interestingly the NRL has also indicated that penalties my be incurred for last season, it is unsure if the NRL could or would strip the Broncos of their prize from last year.
Souths miss out on Lote, in other news Lote Tuqiri has re-signed with the ARU on an estimated $1million per season, after last ditch talks with the South Sydney Rugby League club, Lote has ended weeks of speculation and settled for more time in Rugby Union.
Titans sign Walker, in other NRL signing news today, Chris Walker has excepted a 1 year incentive based contract with the Gold Coast Titans after showing impressive trial form. The nomadic winger has hopefully found a home in his native state and the Titans will be better off for his slick finishing and explosive attack.
The Parramatta Eels today re-signed Nathan Cayless and Nathan Hindmarsh until the end of the 2010 season. The Eels forwards can now concentrate on the 2007 season with their futures assured. Nathan’s brother Ian Hindmarsh was today cleared to play in the opening NRL round after contract disputes with his former Super League club Les Catalans were resolved.
The Penrith Panthers will also miss the services of Frank Pritchard who will be rested for the first game of the 2007 NRL Season due to the hand injuries he sustained recently in a violent brawl with Liverpool locals. Panthers coach Matt Elliott said the decision to rest Pritchard was an easy one, given the fact that it would be silly to risk the boom forward so early in the season. Pritchard has been back in training, however his participation in ball drills was restricted due to the tender damaged sustained in the brawl. Penrith officials said while his hand has healed, the internal tender will take slightly longer to build strength.
