Now Lets Write A Story

December 1st 2006 11:07
Last year while I was posting at a message board I visit I came across mention of NaNoWriMo and after reading up about it on the site thought it could be fun to try. I've never been a writer, I find it hard to put my thoughts into words. Even at school it was always said that I had great imagination but just lacked the skills to write them down. So the challenge was on. I was going to write a novel... well try to.

At the time my husband and I were having problems getting our son to sleep, screaming matches, gates being pulled off from the wall by him and frequent visits from him during the night. Exhausting work and I feel for any parent that went or goes through what we did (and still do to an extent). I've always believed in reading to my son from and early age and so thought that maybe I could write something for the NaNoWriMo that could afterwards to read to Callum.

Anyway I didn't get around to finishing the story... or really getting very far in writing it but thought I'd share some of what little I did write here. Bear in mind this is only a rough sketch so to stay and I do hope one day to be able to finish writing it. Feel free to comment on what you think. **

Chapter ?? - Butter

Callumus and Dude were in Happyland. This was where they sometimes lived with King Daddyus and Queen Mummyus. Happyland was a very joyous place. Laughter could always be heard and nothing but fun was to be had. On the outskirts of the town was a pretty little field filled with lots of different flowers of all kinds of colours. Red ones, blue ones, orange ones and yellow ones to name but a few. Also here were hundreds of thousands of Flutterbyes.

What does a Flutterbye look like? The best way to describe a flutterbye is to think of a butterfly. Where a butterfly has four whole wings a flutterbye has two whole and two hollow wings. They also have tails, which have a flower shape at the end and have no legs. They are just as pretty as butterfly’s just different and come in all shapes and colours. And most importantly they can sing the most beautiful songs and tell the most fascinating stories. Yes a Flutterbye can talk.

It was a nice sunny morning and Callumus and Dude had decided to go play hide and seek in the Field of Pretty Flowers as it was called. Queen Mummyus had prepared a nice basket of drinks and cakes and fruit to take with them. The two best friends set off in high spirits and talked of who could stay hidden for the longest.

Callumus had at one time been the better at this game. Dude used to be allergic to the pollen in the flowers and so kept sneezing which in turn would let out this big flame. On one such occasion a disaster had occurred where Dude had accidentally burnt down most of the Field of Flowers from a continuous sneezing fit. Since then the Granddad Magician had invented a little mask for Dude so as to help with the pollen allergy and to stop with the sneezing and so avoid any more fires. Fires are very dangerous things and so this was a very good thing and a great relief to everyone who lived in Happyland.

On this particular morning Callumus felt very certain that he would be the champion of the hide and seek. He’d been searching for different places to hide and had found on the edge of the field near the woods a hollow tree trunk that would be just big enough for him to squeeze in. He’d never noticed this tree trunk before so it wouldn’t be a place that Dude was used to looking in. He was very happy at the thought of winning. And maybe after they had played a few games they could sit down and have their drinks, cakes and fruit and listen to the lovely sound of the flutterbyes singing and maybe hear a story or two from them. All in all this should be a lovely summer day out.

As they approached the Field of Flowers Dude turned to Callumus and asked, “Who should hide first?”. He was hoping that he might get to do the seeking, hiding amongst the flowers wasn’t exactly great fun for him but hovering above he field trying to find Callumus was great fun, plus it was nice to be up in the sky soaring around and ducking in and out of the fluffy clouds and looking at how small everything was from way up high, everyone looked like tiny ants from up that high.

“ I don’t mind hiding first.” said Callumus. Who was thinking that his place was such a good hiding place that he could stay there long enough to have a good long snooze or even read a comic book. Plus Dude was so much better at counting than him. He could just manage to count to ten but even that took a long time.

“Ready. Steady. Go!! One… two…” Dude started counting.

Callumus ran as fast as he could to his hiding place hoping he’d make it there before Dude got to ten. Run, run, run. Faster, faster, faster. Run, run, run.

“Five… six…” Dude’s booming voice could be heard saying.

Nearly there. thought Callumus. I can just see it up ahead.

“Nine… ten…” Callumus heard Dude say. “Coming to get you ready or not.” Just as he reached the hollow tree trunk and slid inside. Yes! I made it. I wonder how long it will take Dude to find me? Hopefully I have enough time to read my comic book ‘The Adventures of Superflower’.

Just as Callumus was settling down to read he heard a little whimpering sound ever so softly and quietly, it sounded as though someone was crying. Who was it and where was it coming from?

*Blush*

Thank you ladies you give me too much credit, I'm glad you liked what I have so far written. In the new year I will try and write some more.

I get so frustrated with myself as I have the ideas up in my head and know what I want the story to say etc but I just can't put it into words.. Fingers crossed I'll find a way.
