Not A Good Day To Be A Mariners Fan...

December 9th 2011 16:12
Not that most days are good days but recently Mariner fans like myself could begin to see some light at the end of the tunnel. Texas is a very good team but they keep getting a little weaker and older. The Mariners have some good young talent coming up and by 2013 the M's could compete for the playoffs. Then yesterday happened...

The LA Angels signed Albert Pujols and CJ Wilson. ATTENTION MARINERS FANS...GO FIND A LEDGE! Now the Angels will be a very good team for the next five years. Their rotation is Phillies-esque with Weaver, Haren, Santana, and Wilson. Their lineup looks very good with Mike Trout, Pujols, Trumbo, Iannetta, Abreu, and Hunter. And suddenly competing in the next 2 - 3 years looks bleak. Looks like it might be time for the Mariners to look at a 5 year plan...AGAIN.

I am now in the camp that hopes the Mariners sign Prince Fielder (but only like 51% of me) and trade Mike Carp. Heck I'll move Justin Smoak too. Move Brandon League in a trade to get Yonder Alonso or whatever and move on with a core of Fielder and Ackley offensively and look to make some trades. What's the point our only goal now is to beat Oakland! These two moves basically spell doom for the Mariners. They just can't compete with Texas and Los Angeles. I know also believe trading Felix Hernandez is the right move. Build a rotation around Pineda, Hultzen, Paxton, and Walker and go from there. Take the players you get from the Hernandez trade and hopes it gets us a 3B and legit MOTO (middle of the order) bat to go with Fielder. Our current plans all need to be scrapped. Maybe trade for Tulowitzki somehow I don't know but do SOMETHING! AHHHHHHH!!

Ok, Mariners fans, back away from the ledge. And here's why. Yes, the Angels and Rangers look dangerously good right now. But there is a chance that next off-season Josh Hamilton could leave Texas and that really weakens them. Their pitching is far from great. They have a hole at 1B, and they can be beaten. They're still good if the lose Hamilton but not World Series good. The Angels over paid for but Wilson and Pujols. Wilson will be good as #3 or #4 and Pujols has had injuries and he's getting old quickly. Both deals could bite the Angels in the butt. Pujols alone can't get it done and if Abreu and Hunter fall off a cliff like they could do then the Angels lineup is not great.

And to be optimistic about the Mariners our pitching SOLID! Offensively they are getting better. Ackley looks like a future stud and they have some potential in other places. And the M's were 1/2 a game out of 1st place before that historic losing streak. So it's not like the Mariners have no chance. But it got a 1000x tougher. Now the Mariners need a lot of luck and even more talent. Price would be a good place to start since we could have him for 6 years and be a power hitter when we are ready to contend. But if they don't sign him and they stick to their current plans it could work. But we need more patience with the team.

It's not the end of the world. But I think the Mariners rebuilding plan just got accelerated a couple of years.

Abreu, Iannetta, and Hunter? I don't really care much for the Angels offense- it's about average- but they have the second best pitching staff in baseball right now. Things just got tough in the AL West between the Rangers and the Angels, which means that teams like the Mariners are that much further from contention in the division.

Even as average as Abreu, Iannetta, and Hunter are they are still better Olivo, Wells, Gutierrez. And adding Pujols makes that lineup much better. Their pitching got better too and like you said it makes teams that are trying to claw their way into the Ameican League playoff picture that much tougher.
