Northwest No More
October 30th 2008 23:49
If you were to talk about airline mergers of the present, past, and possibly future, you would see how some work and others don't. I'll probably discuss this topic in another post, because there are some that work and some that don't. Sometimes mergers are misunderstood and surrounded by rumors and confusion.
The unsuccessful merger between US Airways and America West has led to an ongoing feud which at times sounds like a War of the Roses. It hasn't gotten better! If you think that is old news, guess again. US Airways' pilots are represented by two unions, ALPA and USAPA.
The Delta-Northwest merger is going ahead full steam. It seems little many can do to stop it although many are still trying. Both Delta and Northwest announced layoffs during the oil price surge. Now they use weasel words to hide an announcement about employee jobs.
Article:
“There will be no front line employees let go as part of our merger,” Bastian said Thursday. “We’re going to retain all our hubs and we’re going to retain all the front line jobs.”
He said HUBS as opposed to locations.
Article:
Delta has its largest hub at Hartsfield-Jackson. It also has hubs in Salt Lake City, Cincinnati and New York. With Northwest—now a Delta subsidiary known as NWA Inc.—it adds hubs in Minneapolis/St.Paul, Detroit, Memphis and Tokyo.
Either way you look at it, the airlines are a very cut-throat industry. Jobs come and go like seasons that change. The Delta merger needs to be observed closely because you have Delta who only has pilots unionized, while Northwest has all unionized employees. The pilots have reached an agreement, while Delta flight attendants have voted down a union for now.
There are some differences between the US-AWA merger and the DAL-NWA merger. AWA actually aquired US and kept the name US Airways, while Delta aquired NWA and will keep the name, DELTA!

They then doubled up all the people that had missed their flights the previous day, and hence the planes were all double booked, and not everyone could fit on the flights.
When we did finally get to fly, the plane was late, and the service was less than acceptable.
Never again.
